Hey CC, just posing some questions about Penn life. While I just about set my heart on Penn, I just have some questions/concerns about the entire college life in general that I think other prospective students might like to know.
1. Just how much school spirit is there at Penn? How's sport turnouts? - I absolutely love getting involved in school spirit, going out to games, and all that good stuff, so what I guess im trying to ask here is how do students here enjoy the school?
2. Are there students that also get off campus and explore? As well as explore Philadelphia I also have this urge to go around the whole northeast coast like New York, Massachusetts, and the beaches.
Thanks in advance!!

Just background, I’m a sophomore at Wharton right now and enjoying Penn thoroughly.

If you want a sports school, Penn isn’t it. Our football team isn’t too good (best in the ivy league though!) and our basketball team is meh. The highest turnout is during the Penn-Princeton basketball game, which is a one time thing.

Yes! The best part of Penn is that it is in the city. Philadelphia is awesome, and I try to go into the city at least once a week or more. We have three subway stops under Upenn’s campus. Transportation to DC or NY or Boston is cheap and easy, whether its by bus or by train. We are 2 hours from NY, close enough to take a day trip. Sadly most students don’t take advantage of this enough. The closest you’ll get to a beach is the Jersey shore, which is frozen throughout most of the school year.

masterc888 thank you so much for that priceless info! I do really like the fact that Upenn is in the midst of the bustling city of Philly as opposed to other top schools in more suburban/rural areas. So while the beach isn’t much of a favorable option to students, do most students tend to stay inside the city?
And just posing another question (sorry if i sound so needy) so without much sport turnouts, what kind of school spirit do the students exhibit? - I’ve looked through the websites and all, but there weren’t many specifics on how students interact with the school besides involvement with faculty and others.

It really depends on the person. I know a lot of my friends tend to go to Boston, Atlantic City, or other areas on the weekends. As for me, I usually stay within the city. I feel that there’s plenty to do within Philly anyway. Just don’t get stuck in the Penn bubble. There’s more of Philadelphia to explore! Also within the residential colleges (at least in Fisher) you can go on excursions called ‘Philadventures’ where you can go anywhere in Philly for free. It’s like the school is paying you to explore the area! It’s great.

As for school spirit I feel that there’s a lot of it at Penn… especially during the Penn v. Princeton football game. But there’s not only school spirit at sports events there’s a lot of school pride for our performing arts groups too! (I don’t know if this answered your second question.)
