Since I've been denied to UVA (my dream school), I guess it's time to consider the options of the other schools I applied to. I applied to UNC Chapel Hill (which I probably won't get accepted to judging on UVA), VCU, William & Mary, and Tech.

I was just wondering how is life at William & Mary and Tech.
I heard that life and William & Mary is almost dreadful. They have they highest suicide rating in the nation apparently and there isn't much to do. There's no parties, almost nobody joins fraternities/sororities, etc.
Tech seems not too bad. Some people join frats (but apparently not too many), and I heard there are only a few parties every now and then. It just doesn't exactly seem too fun.

I really want to join a fraternity when I go to college, so that that would mean that Tech would be better right?

I just want to go to school that has a high academic standard (which both Tech and William & Mary do), but also knows how to have fun.

Aw gee, my young friend is so happy at W&M. STEM kid with lots of interests and plenty of friends. You seem to be coming to these questions late- the usual idea is to have your list of do-able colleges before this stage. Some of the info you want will also depend on your ideas about major.

DD has friends at both Tech and W&M. The Tech crew LOVE it there. Seriously when we went for a visit there it was almost like a cult! Her W&M friends are much more serious students for whom the social aspects of college aren’t quite as important.

I agree that you should examine which school is best for your major.

I guess so. Does it really depend on my major though? I know that if I’m doing a harder major I’ll be studying more, but doesn’t mean I still won’t be going out. I want to be able to go out every weekend and be able to go to parties.

Wow, I don’t know where you are getting your information about these two schools, but it’s no where close to accurate.

I had two cousins who attended Va Tech and loved it. They like to have a good time and had rich, full social lives. My male cousin did not join a frat, you can have a great time without joining one. I had a nephew who had way too much fun at Tech and flunked out - so watch the partying. Remember you are there to learn first, then have fun and explore college life. Tech also has lots of school spirit.

William and Mary is also wonderful. The kids there are a bit more cerebral, but they like to have fun too. The frats there have new houses and they host parties. The sports scene is no where like Tech, it’s more intimate, as the school is much smaller. Your probably more likely to know the players. There are three dellys “bars” off campus that help create a small town college feel.

You should find someone you know that is a student at each place and see if you can’t spend a weekend hanging out with them to get a better feel for each campus. Neither is a Charlottesville, but it isn’t fair to compare them to that city, they all have their unique qualities and you have to be open to seeing what those are.
