Life at YALE

Does anyone have any specific questions about everyday life, dorms, parties, etc at Yale? Any of us Yalies would be happy to answer them.

How prevalant are parties on campus? Easy to access? Open to everybody?

Parties occur about every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. With Fridays tending to be slightly quieter than Thursdays and Saturdays. If you are interested in going to frat parties which can get old pretty quickly, they are normally just a slight walk from old campus. I tend to think parties in common rooms are more fun, as they have a smaller group of people, more people you know, and better alcohol. Unlike other universities, the majority of parties at Yale are open to all students. The week before school starts is known as “Camp Yale”, with multiple parties occurring every night. Camp Yale is a great time to get to know your suitemates, and meet fellow students (if you’re like me you’ll remember tons of faces, but very little names). Many Yalies also go to Toad’s dance club on Saturday nights which is 21+, but is relatively easy to get in after figuring out their armband system or with a fake. In general, the party scene at Yale is pretty chill. I would also like to add that there is very little pressure to drink if you do not want to.

Hey tim

are there ppl at yale who prefer going out on a saturday than spending it drinking and partying? Do you know any?!

Yeah, there are many people who feel that the Yale party scene is not for them. As a result, there are plenty of things to do that do not revolve around drinking. Residential colleges sometimes host dances and study breaks with great food. Occasionally, Yale will host a sneak peak of a soon to be released movie, in which students are sometimes admitted for free. The surrounding area also offers a lot, if you are willing to spend a little bit of money. There are many great places to get pizza, cafes (one that you can make smores at), and places offering ethnic food. One of my favorite places to go with friends is Ivy Noodle, a cheap horribly Americanized Chinese restaurant, which strangely hits the spot at around 1am on Saturdays. Also, a cappellas and members of YSO will occasionally put on concerts which are great. The admissions committee does a great job at selecting students with varying interests and likes. Consequently I have friends that will go to parties with me, and also ones that I can chill and go places with.

There are a lot of frat and regular parties within a walking distance from old campus and most of the residences.....

Rodrigo Coutino

What made you decide to go to Yale? What are the pros and cons other than the reputation? Are the academics grueling and unbearable?

I've heard some amazing things about the social life at Yale, but I'm trying not to get my expectations up impossibly high. So, what is the socioeconomic mix at Yale? Are working class kids comfortable socializing with more preppy students, and vice versa? Are professors engaged in teaching? Do transfer students have a relatively easy time to blend in socially?

what were your achievements that got you into yale?
