Life changing dilemma ):

Hi guys, I'm not really sure where to post this, but since it relates to high school I shall post it here :)

I have a serious decision to make that can potentially change my high school life/grade/college options.

I have to decide if I want to move to Dubai with my mom, since she works there, or stay in Canada and finish high school here. The problem is, next year, when I am in grade 11, I will start my IB diploma courses. The reason I don't mind moving is because our current IB Coordinator is leaving, and a new person is replacing him here. I am afraid the new teacher would lack experience in coordinating everything. My school has been an established school for over 10 years.

However, next year, I would also have the opportunity to go to New York with my high school band to compete and have fun. I have been excited about this trip since grade 9, and I would love to go for the experience. The other problem is, next year, I would also have the opportunity to go to a poverty-stricken country to minister to children. It is the outreach program in our school and I was really looking forward to it, because I anticipate that it would be an amazing opportunity to share the work of God and definitely experience living in a third world country. I always thought that admin officers would like to see students who have traveled around and helped people.

If I do move to Dubai, I would probably go to a new school, like a school that had their first graduating class last year, and only 2 years of IB introduced. I'm not really sure if I should go, because I am afraid the education would not be as good as the one I am getting now, and that would seriously affect my future University options. The only good I see out of moving to Dubai is that I can write about how I adapt to changes quickly and I am willing to try new things?

I'm sorry for this super long post, but I really need the insight of you brilliant CCers and help me come to a decision. I really hope you guys can read and advice me on what to do.

:)

sorry, the schools in Dubai actually have 10+ years of IB experience, I was looking at the wrong schools :x

I knew a guy whose family was strongly considering moving to Dubai. He really liked the city, but you have to understand: It is not Canada. It is not America. A white non-Muslim (which I assume you are?) is probably going to feel out of place anywhere in the Middle East. While it’s a much nicer place for white people than anywhere else in the region, it’s going to be incredibly difficult to adjust to life there. You’d probably go to an American school with the children of Americans who moved to Dubai, and even that alone would probably be a major culture shock for a Canadian, let alone doing that halfway across the world surrounded by Middle Easterners.

If you want to go to college in Canada or America, packing up and heading to Dubai for two years seems like an unnecessary uprooting of your life when you’re only a few years away from uprooting your life again.

I’m asian-canadian, and I have done a big move before, from singapore to canada in grade 6, so I don’t really mind a move. I’m just really concerned about how it would affect my college decisions?
