Life experience essays

How come it seems like everyone does life experience essays? Do you have to open your heart to the admissions officers?

The question I'm answering is:

If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be?

Would it work just to talk about the figure, who he was, and say why I look up to him and why I chose him out of all the greats? Should I focus on myself, and what I do to be like this person? My essay just doesn't seem as emotional and real as the essays I've read here. Am I doing something wrong?

I think you can do a couple comparisons if you want too. You know… like “George washington’s hysterically rib-tickling… and it just so happens… that I AM TOO!!”

you know. to make yourself stand out!

I think a great approach is to put yourself into the shoes of the person you are writing about. As a dramatic example, suppose it was Abraham Lincoln:

Notice I did about 5 minutes research to embellish this (thanks, wikipedia). It’s very impressive to have these kinds of details in there, like who spoke first, what they said, and how long it was.

Anyway, you can adapt this technique to whomever you want to write about, and it will help get the whole essay started.

I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. If several people show who they are through a life experience, you will show who you are by who you look up to. They are just two different ways of evaluating the person. People tend to pick life experience because it is the broadest topic.

Thanks guys. I really like that idea digmedia.

I was just worried that in the midst of all these emotional essays, I would seem cold and perhaps boring, since I’m not telling a story. Digmedia’s method seems to solve the latter.

Just remember that you’re not writing a run of the mill “report.” You don’t want to write an essay about why you want to meet Abraham Lincoln just because of all the things he did. You need to say that you want to meet him because the things he did have impacted you in specific ways. Make sure you keep the personal in your personal essay.

^___ superb advice, phpfan!!

But perhaps for historical figures,
you choose someone who, while important in history, also had a side of him/her that closely resembles you. That way, you might be able to get your passion/personality type off in dialogue, or mind thinking.

Thanks for the advice! The person I was thinking doesn’t resemble me too much, but I strive to be like him.

This is taking me a very long time to write!
