Life In and After Stern

this is what my friend at Stern had to say about Stern. He is a junior majoring in Fiance and Marketing.
"Stern is definitely one of the top colleges u should consider for
further studies. It is well respected and its close proximity with
Wall Street gives it an unparalleled advantage. Wall street firms know
and regularly consult with out faculty, which also helps in
recruitment, as sometimes faculty is able to help us out by arranging
meetings and appointments with wall street firms they think will make
a good fit with one of their students.

Job offers generally depend on your gpa and other qualifications. Our
average must be somewhere around $60-80k but that is just the base
salary. Most of the money is made in the bonuses and that depends on a
lot of factors. I know people who made 200k their first year.

The recruitment and job opportunities make stern irresistable. Plus it
is in New York, so its extremely beneficial for networking. NYC being
the financial capital of the world, there is no problem in finding
jobs if you are well qualified.

The only con which i can think about Stern is that the studies are
very intensive. There is a lot of work and it has to consistently be
of a very high quality. While you can slack off and take things easy,
it will generally be reflected on your grade. Not sleeping for 3
straight days is something i am familiar with.

I hope i havent scared you :-). Coming to stern was a great
opportunity and i am loving the experience. Btw, Stern is also highly
ranked, so thats not a problem. I believe its 2nd in Finance and Intl
Biz or something like that. At least it was when i applied, i dont
know what the current situation is."

I know NYU might be expensive, but if you do well, a Stern degree pays for itself. I know I will be attending next year, paying 52k a year. After all Stern churns out the most bankers of any school in the US, except for maybe(most likely not) Wharton. Even if you don't want to be a banker, there a tons of opportunities here. Stern has GREAT professors. I have had the chance to interact with a few of them and they are very down to earth and very accomplished in their respective fields. Stern maybe ranked #5, in the US News Survey(not accurate)but most people with real passion for business choose it only second to Wharton. Do hope that you take the opportunity to attend this world class business school in arguably the greatest city in the world(financially, socially, culturally).

by the way he doesn't just study, he parties a lot too. but like most Stern students he knows how to manage time probably, the key to success. know when to hit the books and when to hit the bar.

So obviously if you work hard and keep your gpa up, stern pays for itself. Can you say the same about any of the other colleges at NYU? I got into GSP for CAS. Loaning is what's keeping me from going to NYU-paying it back actually. Do cas economic majors fair well with stern economics majors when finding a job?

nice post legionaire

hollacuteness

I think the general consensus is, although Sternies do have a leg up in getting recruited for jobs, Econ majors from CAS do fare really well in the business world. An econ major from CAS definitely can pay for itself....expecially when doubled up with something like math. That's an extremely hot commodity right there(econ+math).

What's the point of this post? To tell everybody how good Stern is?
Legionaire, no offense, but you aren't even here yet...why don't you enjoy the rest of your senior year, actually come to Stern and then tell everybody how great it is.

people wanted to know what stern is like, that is the point. I'll take your advice into consideration. just posting what i heard, with healthy dose of bias. while we are on the subject, how would you describe your experience in Stern so far?

Anyone interested in econ+math should check out Actuarial Science!
It's a great major, a great career, and a great club!
I'm a freshman right now, and I'm going to be the secretary next year...anyone have any questions about the profession, or major, or club, just let me know
