life in baltimore

my apologies if there is already another thread concerning this topic! (i took a cursory glance at the pages, and didn't see any..)

For those who live in baltimore or go to jhu, what do you like to do / where do you like to go on weekends and for leisure? please also note if you can there using public transportation in a somewhat timely manner =)

bump, please!

iono why anyone hasn't replied here, and i'm not sure what 'bump' means, haha. but uhm, i'll give you a reply from my experiences -- keep in mind, this was during summer so there might've been more things to do than during a winter in baltimore, haha.

Transportation:
JHU Shuttle - VERY convenient...leaves approx every half hour to hour, depending on what time of day. Stops include: Peabody, Penn Station, JHMI, and a couple other inbtw places (i think they were housing for undergrads there during summer).
JHU Escort - Also very convenient. Call them up from ur dorm phone or cell, tell them your destination (anywhere in 1 mile radius - there's ALOT), within 5 minutes they pick you up from designated spots on campus and drop you off, then later call them and they pick you up again.
TAXI - of course
PENN Station - I hear it goes to alot of places and very cheap

Weekend/Leisure:
Off-Campus:
INNER HARBOR!!! dining, eateries, ride on a boat, mall, shop stores, barnes and nobles, hardrock cafe, espn zone, chipotle, crab/seafood places, pizzaria, some important UN bldg or something, haha, and of course the Aquarium! great place to chill with friends Fri afternoons. also if you take the Water Taxi - it can take you to other parts of the harbor. Little Italy is a couple blocks from Inner Harbor (walking dist) and has unbelievably good italian restaurants, with ALL price ranges =).
Museum of Art - i never been inside, but i've picnicked with our RA group at the sculpture garden outside (adjacent to jhu), very nice ~
Baltimore Zoo - it's a pretty decent zoo =)
Orioles Game!! - I was soo sad I couldn't go, but I had a hospital shift that day...but I hear it was amazing!!
Across the street from the "Beach" of jhu - Xando! ruby tuesday, some dessert eatery, Rocky RUn!!!!, and other lovely hangout, food, movie rental, Gaga's ICE CREAM!!, UniMini!! (mini mart), a bank, and other mini supermarkets....oh and a subway too!

Hmmm....there's a small shopping plaza within the mile radius of jhu....the name escapes me now....but its decent there too...nothing fancy but nice quick getaway

DC is always fun to go to =P. So is Annapolis. And Six Flags! but those are longer trips. Arundel Mills Mall is AWEEESOME shopping mall, but that's like a 40 minute drive too.

ONCAMPUS:
Athletic Rec Center! - amaaazing facilities!! well, it's enough to fill MY needs =D and i'm pretty athletic, haha.
The "Beach" - wonderfully large oval (?) section of grass where ppl hang, read, play frisbee, lie out to tan, and such...
The Library - hahaa, yes, for nerds it is great, especially the couches and the study rooms =D
The mini game room next to Terrace (food eatery for AMR and Bldg A/B ppl)
The game room place in Levering...I believe it was in levering...next to the Glass Pavilion....
ANy food places pretty much lol
The Mattin Center piano/instrument rooms are verrryyy nice for musically inclined ppl =]
I hear there are many parties during the year too - some friends love 'em, some think they're stupid, matter of opinion I guess

Well, those were from summer (xcept party lol)....but I'm sure there's alot more available to regular JHU students (esp Oncampus stuff).....so um yeah, JHU go-ers....What am I missing?....lol
-I'd like to know, myself =)

I guess the real question to ask is what is there not to do in baltimore? When you think about it, you are going to a large city, so there is going to be something for everyone. Tons of restaurant, malls, things to do, etc. If you like going to clubs there are plenty, want to play golf? its here, like drinking? you got fells point, essential what i am getting at is there really is everything to do here. My one complaint would be that there aren't that many of famous/or well known land marks that people flock to, a lot of baltimore's famous places are smaller and not well known (which may be a good thing depending on how you view it). But if you are really looking for that kind of stuff DC is a 45 minute train ride away. Baltimore has a lot of upside to it

Transportation wise, the schools shuttles are great at getting people around to most of the "hotspots" Taxis and buses are always a good option. One point of clarification is that the school stopped doing their escort service to spots within a 1 mile radius (which really sucks) so you can't use that anymore

for xtina, bump = bring up my post =) actually, i only recently found out what that means (via urbandictionary!!)...it's just to make a comment so that your thread is moved to the top of the list.

spe07- good point you have there. from what i had read about baltimore, it sounded like it was exciting and had all sorts of stuff to do there =) just wanted some more reassurance, again.

thanks for the helpful posts!

p.s. living 20 minutes or so from Los Angeles, i guess there's a lot i could do in LA or hollywood, too. (staples center, disney hall, be an audience member in tapings of shows, or go and look at celebrities' houses, etc etc) but then, i find that with the exception of taking advantage of the l.a. music center, i don't really too much for the "famous places"...so i won't be missing that much in baltimore

ohhhh!! I live like 30-40 min from LA...and that's so true, haha. I've only been there for formal-business related stuff, never for "fun" hahaha....and I've only been to Hollywood like five times my whole life! wow....altho Disneyland, Knotts, six flags, the beaches, and other such "renowned fun" places were like my childhood's 2nd home =P

One thing not to miss while in Baltimore is the Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum, and his grave in Westminster Burying Ground. Waiting for the "Poe Toaster" is a famous local ritual! (More at the website of the E. A. Poe Society.)

one thing i keep getting told by my friend about Baltimore (he's from Towson which is only 10 minutes or so away from Hopkins) is that it's only getting better! It's turning more commercialized...slowly but surely.

Hey hey!!

Student Council worked out a plan with the escort service!! But its no longer you call and wait 5 minutes and they're there - but they run on a timed schedule now. but still! Better something than nothing!!
YaY for Student Council!!
And they said if you are feeling unsafe, you can still call the escort service and they'll pick you up. NIFTY!~
