Life lesson 101 kids

The town is Ft. Pierce, Florida…I actually live just south of there and have to drive through that area everyday to go to school, its pretty rough. There’s a LOT of controversy going on though about this situation some think the officer should be punished severely others think he did the right thing so I dont know it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out.

I’m leaning though to the cop being more at fault just because that girl was soo small did he honestly need to use that much force on her? And if you watch the video youll see he looks directly at the camera a number of times kind of making it seem like he was doing this for show. But the girl is at fault too she shouldn’t have been out at 1:30 am and she was walking around with a bag full of clothes that still had price tags on them which makes her even more suspicious. I definitely see a lawsuit coming out of this one though…

Heres a link with the video plus the article that went along with it.

http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2007/oct/04/dramatic-arrest-caught-camera-fort-pierce/

Well of course the cop looked at the camera. It was for exactly what’s coming up now. Sort of saying “look, I’m doing everything properly, by the book, and not letting my emotions rule me and make me use unnecessary force.”

If you think a cop is in the wrong, and you resist or disobey his orders, then you are playing right into his hands. I used to walk home at around 1 in the morning from an old job I had. All the time I would get stopped, have a flashlight shone in my eyes, and be interrogated by police. It was annoying but they had the right to do it. If I had reacted the way that girl did, then I would’ve deserved an ass kicking.

My friend’s younger sister (she was probably about 5 or 6) sprayed pepper spray directly into her eyes…she was screaming in pain, people were freaking out, 911 was called. When the paramedics arrived, they calmed everyone down, gave the girl a popsicle, and left.

People who say this is “police brutality” are laughable. People who make this a race issue? Even more annoying.

The girl was seriously acting like she was on drugs. Her behavior was so, so incredibly uncalled for. I have had friends who have freaked out when arrested, be it crying or even running from the police. Sometimes, the police are in the wrong. But screaming, twisting, and biting when apprehended? That’s insane. The policeman was very swift and professional. Had he tried to wrestle or overpower her, it is likely she would have been seriously injured. The pepper spray was the appropriate response to protect both the officer and the girl.

Anyone else find it hilarious that the cop - a grown man - was struggling to get her other hand behind her back?

No. I think he could have done it with ease, but he was very afraid of hurting her, ex. spraining/breaking a wrist or arm.

Exactly. Do people here have the intelligence to consider what would happen if he had tried to force her hard and broken a limb or joint? How much do you think everyone would be screaming brutality then? A LOT. Which is why the guy DIDN’T DO IT, and instead used a much more conservative compliance method.

Yeah i think he was afraid to bruise her when he was first arresting her. He says it over and over again, don’t make me use force on you, etc. I don’t know why arresting her was necessary but she shouldn’t have resisted it. She could’ve explained it or whatever at the station. I do think the smack in the face was uncalled for and there was no reason for the pepper spray after he smacked her in the face (i mean her shoulder or something it would’ve been better)

That’s nonsense, he wasn’t even arresting her, he was trying to restrain her. If he was, he would have been reading her her rights, yet with closer inspection it seems like he was trying to keep her there. This is still ridiculous though, she’s 15, and there’s no way anyone could think that little girl was on drugs, you obviously haven’t seen someone on drugs before.

yes, pulling a young girls arm will surely cause a break. are you kidding? I really don’t see the need in punching a 15 year old girl in the face. think about it. yeah, she was an idiot for resisting arrest and probibly coulda made something out of it publicly if she didn’t bite the guy but I think it was a bit much.

They only have to read them their rights before questioning them. That can happen later at the station.

Sometimes I am in such awe of people. “Oh! He’s white she’s black. Oh, she’s so small and he’s so big!” Come on - would it have been better if it was a black cop? Maybe we should just have black cops patrol black areas and white cops patrol white areas? Hm, how racist would that be?

Has anyone on this forum ever been pepper sprayed or felt anything like it? When I went to basic training we had to inhale the stuff to know exactly what it felt like. At least five times since then while on training patrols they’ve thrown cans of the stuff in our path to make sure that we were proficient with our gas masks. It sucks but it’s not horrible. Each time I was fine after no longer than 10-15 minutes and if your nose was stuffed before it surely wasn’t afterwards.

Yes, he smacked her in the face. SHE BIT HIM FIRST. I don’t care who you are but if you bite me in the arm I’m going to react and smack away what is causing the harm. You can be an 80 year old frail woman and I’m going to smack you - DON’T BITE PEOPLE.

I don’t like cops for the most part and I usually let them them know with a middle finger as I drive by but this guy didn’t do anything wrong. He was looking at the camera with an exasperated look, almost as if saying, “I do not want to be here. I am playing by the book. I am not breaking any rules.” And you know what? He didn’t break any rules. He was trying to make an arrest. He was calm, his voice was clear and steady, his commands were easy to understand.

If she believes that her arrest was unjust then she needs to fight that in court but now she will have to face multiple charges.

No, I don’t think it’s hilarious - he obviously wasn’t using full force against her.

Did she honestly believe that by screaming, resisting arrest and saying, “Sorry!” and “Mommy!” he would let her go? Even after she BIT him?

Kudos to the officer. I think more force was needed, though. He should have overpowered her in the first place to cuff her, so he didn’t need to use pepperspray.
