I thought it was a really good book, but only after the first read. It get's boring if you read it again. I didn't find it a challenging read at all. You could probably get through it quite quickly.

Yeah, I've alway thought it was a math book.... :/

I read it a few years back and have been meaning to read it again so I can actually enjoy the underlying themes (I was like 12 when I read it first), I liked it very much though.

What's the significance of the "ambiguity"/similarities between humans and animals besides just the fact that there is some bestiality in every human?

skatj: well...lol my eng teacher answered this question when my friend walked in with this book and totally ruined it for me...
to be really straightforward: cannibalism
the guy describes the HUMANS he is EATING for survival in terms of the ANIMALS he correlates them with - yeah, i know, scary!

I read it back when I was... 11, maybe ten, I think. The narrative was relatively pleasing, as was the general premise, and the writing style was fairly simple (in the understandability of it) from what I recall.

The general consensus among my peers and seniors (not HS but rather by age) that have read it is that its philosophical undertones are terribly sophomoric in their presentation and meaning. I can't quite be the judge, as I didn't really pay much attention during my first read, but it may be a bit below what your used to (depending upon, of course, whatever it is that your used to).

I think it's one of my summer books for the upcoming school year, though. I'll have to pick it up sooner or later. :/

its really good...funny, scary, gross, and a good read.

If you are Indian, you will never look at a gulab jamun the same way again.

booooooring..... didn't get past the first few pages... I can't believe all of you guys liked it!!

when i picked it up (it was gift from my godmother) I had no idea what it was exactly about, so I enjoyed part I. The only part I found confusing was when the main character was describing the boat, as I am the least nautical/maritime person EVER and couldn't picture the boat in my head. Apart from that, the book was amazing.

also it took me one day to read (maybe 3.5 hours.) I'm the type of girl that loves the Gossip Girl and A-List series. I can see how this would be a tedious book to read for a class.

There has already been a thread on this book. I think it had the same title too. Maybe. Anyways, It is a great book, a Modern Classic.
