For Winter they offer Pires or Graffin. Which is easier? I looked up Bruinwalk and Pires I hear is a great teacher but really hard and has 2 quizzes per week. Any help please?

Also there's Butler and Kucherenko for Math 3B and Kucherenko seems hard based on Bruinwalk but no info on Butler?

I’m taking Butler right now (it’s his first quarter teaching at UCLA) and I had Kucherenko last year.

Butler’s first midterm was ridiculously easy and everyone did well (so as a result the test was essentially meaningless since the class is curved). He’s an interesting lecturer and tries hard to keep everyone awake. Generally, he does a good job of getting his points across.

Kucherenko is an excellent lecturer. She has an accent, but if anything, that accent makes you remember things better (you’ll know what I mean if you take her class). She covers everything in great detail at a manageable pace. Her midterms were easy to medium, and her final was insanely hard.

Really, you shouldn’t have to worry about how hard a professor is since the class is curved anyway. If anything, it’s easier to predict what kind of grade you’ll get with harder professors. As for choosing between Butler and Kucherenko, you can’t go wrong with either.

I had Kuckerenko for Math 3A last year. As said above, she is a great lecturer, probably as good as it gets in the math series. Her tests are tricky, but not overly difficult.

Graffin is supposedly painfully boring, whereas Pires is unnecessarily difficult. At least that’s what I hear second hand, haven’t taken either.

i took pires for LS1. LS series is going to require a lot of work so obviously don’t expect to breeze through any of those classes. Pires is not ridiculously hard (fairly average in difficulty). A lot of people find her hard because they don’t put in the necessary work. Id recommend pires for the simple reason that if you can pull through her class, you’ll have a rough estimate of what it takes to get through the rest of the LS series.

i have no idea about graffin

(i wouldn’t recommend LS1 as a GE for non-life science majors)

hmmm i just checked today and LS1’s being taught by piers and haplin, NOT graffin… anyone know him!? he’s not even on bruinwalk!!
anyone had him b4? he taught intro to ecology and behavior, and i think collaborated w/ another LS1 prof. before… i can’t take piers cuz of schedule conflict but iono if haplin is good! >.<
