Life With a Mechanical Engineering Major

What is it like for a person majoring in Mechanical Engineering? How is the workload for that major? How much free time? Are you guys always stressed out? Also, if I find AP Calculus AB somewhat easy or not very challenging, would studying engineering be a little easier for me? I'm just wondering what my life may be like if I go to Penn. Thanks in advance :)

Most entering engineers/physical science majors have taken Calc BC in high school, so having only taken AB you will not have any advantage whatsoever. It’s also impossible to tell how rigorous your high school is, so the Calc class you are taking might not necessarily be at the level of the class at Penn.
I know a few people in ME and at least two people in both ME and physics. They all seem to really like the major and are fine with the workload. Some really like working in the machine shop.

You are going to hate my answer,

but knowing little about your school, you, and how many classes you plan to take per semester at Penn, it is impossible for me to predict your workload.

But here’s a good idea. When you come to Penn, party alot. And if you get bad grades, study more. If you still get good grades, well… party more!

I will say life “after” with a mechanical engineering degree will make you very happy. MEs have lots of options if they do well in engineering school.

What do you mean by lots of options? I plan on going into business after (Finance, Marketing, or Product Research). Are people successful when they take this route? I would love to hear you’re opinion.

Why would you major in ME if plan to go into finance? You’ll be having a more difficult workload than economic majors but end up with similar jobs.

The options I was referring to would be job prospects and top graduate school opportunities. I agree with Bouncer, why go into finance with a ME degree (two very different worlds)? If you want something in the way of business with an ME degree then going for an MBA is a valid option.

On this same context is it easier for Upenn Engineering students to get into Wharton MBA after they complete their UG ? any Upenn students in CC can shed some light ?
