Lightweight Crew

My rowing coach said that Navy has historically had one of the best Lightweight Crew teams in the country, and I was just wondering if there was anyone in this forum who was on the team or knew something about it. I wanted to know what kind of kids the coaches are looking for, split times, etc..

^^^^^
Check out the Lightweight Crew web page. The page has a recruiting link that should point you in the right direction.

One of my good friends is a plebe on the lightweight team. If you have any specific questions, I can ask him for you, but I dont know all the terminology of crew so you'll have to put it in english :)

Crew guys are freakin' insane. My roommate is a walk-on for the heavy-weight team, and surprisingly, he's in the top 12 or so for the plebe team. Now that the season has started, he's rarely at lunch, misses mando dinner, and comes back late and exhausted. I usually don't see him after 3rd period until 7 or so that night. And morning practices start this week at 0500 to add to that.

Everybody and their mother goes out for crew in the beginning. When sports started over plebe summer, about 20 of the 39 plebes in my company were in crew. Now, only 5 are still with it. Only 1 of those 5 were recruited. The others had no rowing experience at all, but are stickin' with it.

If you have rowing experience, they'll take you in a heartbeat and you should have no problem.

hey do varsity sports interfere with your academic time?
do athletes generally get poorer gpa than nonahtletes?
how's rowing crew in terms of keeping your grade at least a 3.5?

also is there any cut for the crew team?
I'm also interested in the track team.
it would be cool if anyone can give me some insight on that

most crew teams will have a limit on the amount of kids they can carry on the roster....and most cuts will result from erg times that usually are used to differentiate between rowers. If you are interested in crew, do prep by running and strength/conditioning training (legs and upper body)....crew is a terrific sport, but not for the faint of heart!

Maintaining a 3.5 GPA with any athletics will be a challange, which is not to say it can't be done (there is one kid on the lax team with a 4.0)....and no doubt he has company in other sports... just keep in mind, any varsity sport will keep you very busy.

As for athletes having poorer GPA than non-athletes.... difficult to answer, as that is not posted. There was some research done on this years back, but the bottom line is that athlete or not, your GPA will remain a reflection of how much work you put into your grades. It all comes down to balancing and budgeting your time, something you will never have enough of to get all that you need done.
