Hey guys,
I am currently a lightweight junior rower and I am very keen on rowing in college and am exploring the possibility of getting recruited. My rowing stats are: 2k: 6:41 (March 29th 2014) 6k: 21:47 (Early December 2013). The colleges I would love to attend are Georgetown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Penn, and Columbia. I will be going through a very intense training during the summer and I expect to be sub 6:35 by the end of summer. I am at a very competitive public Texas High School and I am in the top 10% of a class of 550 (4.15 GPA weighted). My SAT is a 2340, 800 math 780 cr 760 writing(English is my second language). No outstanding regatta results as our team is in a rebuilding process after going to grand finals in mens Light 8 at Junior Nationals my freshman year.
I would just like to know what times coaches start to look at to recruit rowers, I hear around 6:30 is where one wants to be to be looked at by coaches, and anything else they look at.
Also, if anyone has gone through the recruiting process, if they could share their experience of the recruiting process and college rowing.

Thank you!

Hi Bocben. You could start by filling out each team’s recruting form, which you will find on their websites. Then send an introductory email to the Freshman coach in which you list your stats (eg. Ht, wt, 2k, GPA, SAT and regatta results. You may want to include your plans for rowing, training this summer.) Will you be rowing at any of the major summer regattas, i.e. Club nationals, Independence Day, or Royal Canadian Henley? Typically the college coaches are there and use the opportunity to evaluate the recruits while racing and to meet the rowers they have been emailing. Your academic stats are great, and I think you are right to shoot for sub 6:35. Good luck.

@carolinab Thank you so much for your prompt response. I have filled in a few recruiting questionnaires and emailed a few coaches but only one has answered so far. I will be rowing at club nationals and at Canadian Henley this summer and I have just informed the coach I am in contact with. Thank you so much for your help!

Hello Bocben carolinab is right on this. Start by introducing yourself to the coach by an email and do the form- do not be put off if you don’t hear anything right away - but are you working at getting sub 6:40 asap before UVs and later when the OV are planned ? you have great test results and marks. Everything happens this summer for you. Those few seconds will make all the difference!! Good luck

And sorry for not adding the timing earlier - UVs are in the summer for some schools. We went on a few in August (planned organized visits to the boathouses with meeting the coaches, other potential recruits and their moms and dads)
