Lightweight Rower

I am currently a junior and I am 6' 2" and only 145 lbs. My 2k isn't too great though. I will hopefully be at around 6:50-6:55ish by this spring. So, I was wondering how colleges will look at me and if I have a chance at possibly being recruited.

I’d say you have a chance. You’re really going to want to get sub 6:40 though for the better schools to get looked at. Also, the worse your 2k the higher your academic stats will need to be.

2k is the only objective way for coaches to decipher skill level between candidates. It is the MOST important thing when it comes to getting recruited. The second i dropped my 2k to a desirable time for LW girls, 4 coaches were suddenly talking to me about officials and signing and when im going to commit.

Race results and Coach recommendations only go so far

Thanks. Did you contact the coaches? how did they see your times?

I emailed the coaches all of my stats and various coaches (club, summer, school) corroborated them.

As others have said:

  1. The erg score is the most important part, so work on it to get it as low as possible. Coaches may start looking at 6:50, but obviously, the lower, the better.
  2. It depends on what school you are looking (Penn will be easier than Princeton or Harvard).
  3. However, results at national/regional regattas (Stotes, SRAA, Youth nationals, etc.) also count, especially if you’re in a boat with HW rowers or if you’re sculling.
  4. If you’re doing well in other sports (liek cycling, swimming, x-country), this will also help.
  5. Obviously, GPA and test scores.
  6. Once you have a decent erg time, email the coaches with your height/weight, erg time, GPA, test scores, race results.
Also, even if you’re not outright recruited, coaches may be interested and support you.

New to the forum here: my daughter is a hs junior, lightweight rower. 2k erg: 7:37 (last spring), several club awards, rows in light and open boats, incl. Varsity 8, junior women’s national team dev. camp last summer, just missed making nationals.

hey_pal: do you mind saying what your erg score was to head to Princeton? D contacted several coaches this week, instantly heard back from 2… but not Princeton or Wisconsin (she has yet to fill in the questionnaires).

Her academics will prob. just meet the bar (Harvard told her 3.8 gpa, 2100 sats)… or we hope so! Thanks for input.

Welcome sukwi! Can’t help much on the lwt erg score, but I strongly suggest that you have your daughter take the SAT or ACT as soon as possible. She will get much more attention from coaches once they know she is actually recruitable from an academic standpoint. Best of luck!

Yes, she’s taking this month; we let coaches know her PSAT score (reasonable predictor of SAT) and will update scores/races/grades per their request…

If someone was going under 6:20 by the summer before their senior year as a lightweight, what would their academic statistics have to be to be recruited by HYP. I know that the average academic index for a crew team is relatively high and they generally don’t take kids anywhere near the floor. on a 4.0 scale (4.0 for regular class, 4.25 for honors/ap) would a 3.4-3.45 be good enough or is it out of the question

If I had to guess, I would say it is good enough. Is that mostly B’s with some A’s in the hardest track of classes available? If that’s the case, then yes.

under 6:20 for a lw would definitely draw attention

Freshman GPA: 3.1
Sophomore GPA: 3.5 (3Hon) possible 4 hon
Junior GPA: 3.8-3.9 (2AP, 1Hon) possible 4AP, 1Hon

Given that a LW junior rower who goes under 6:20 would quite likely win the indoor rowing world championships, a 3.4 with the upwards trend would most certainly be good enough. What’s the SAT score range?

6:20 will get you in somewhere. I’d say 2k SAT maybe…6:20 is enough to get you a shot at U23 testing.

Sukiw If you would like some advice on this recruiting journey I would be happy to help. PM me if interested. I would be happy to tell you the things we wish we had known about the process.

ivyrow15, thank you for your message! I can update to say that daughter has emailed 5 coaches and received positive responses from 3 (no response from other two, but she’ll keep them posted as grades, scores, race results become available this spring).

we are just at the beginning and discovering how much there is to learn (I’ve been in touch with beenthere2 who is very helpful). All advice very welcome and we would love to hear of your journey navigating this process.

ummmm, pm on its way (just getting the hang of this here, sorry!)
