Like the words of a man who has spent a little too much time alone.

Andrew Bird lyrics. You should look him up, he's quite good really.

You're here already- why dont you take a quick gander...

I switched school districts, and states, between my 8th and 9th grade year. It was a tough move, but the new district I went into was a ridiculously easy and uncompetitive one -- thus, I had a 4.0 GPA with no problems. Then, we moved again and back to my old state, but to a ridiculously competitive to the point of insanity school -- and my unweighted GPA dropped. and dropped. and dropped. But, I still cling on to hope in the spirit of the times. Yes, my school is recognized as an extremely tough public high school by colleges (and boasts itself to be #1 in the state...though that's surely debatable). Tell me what you think!

Oh, also, I live in Ohio.

I plan to go into law school eventually, with a major in economics.

Top Choices- I'm early applying to one of these:
Brown/Columbia

Also really like-
Duke, Upenn, Dartmouth, Berkeley, UMich, UCLA

Considering-
Cornell, Johns Hopkins, NYU

Because I have to:
OSU

Thank you so much for your time!

Also, I expect the counselor recommendation to be really good because she is extremely serious about getting me into Columbia. Of course, both of us wishing our hardest isn't going to do the trick, but I'm sure that she will do a tremendous job with whatever she has control over.

And I'm in the top 5%, I think.

Great chances at all the schools you’re considering, but you know how top colleges are. With everything you’ve got, you’ll certainly get into a school you like. Do you know what you’ll be writing your essay on?

Being a premed (go Duke 2013), I liked your Cleveland Clinic awards (the model UN stuff sounds great too). I wish there was something like that in podunk north Florida where I live, but my way less impressive hospital experience (washing out burns, shadowing docs, and doing fake IVs in a local ER) was great in its own way.

Duke is absolutely beautiful. I actually lived in North Carolina my freshman year- we visited Duke before I left. It’s stunning, and it has great programs as well. But you knew that :D

and thank you!

Also, I’ve been offered a job starting fall of my senior year. I’m sure I’ll be extremely busy with my classes and applications and extracurriculars, so I’m considering turning it down. But, does anyone know if it will it make a huge difference on my chances if I do take it up ?

Oh, also, I think I’m going to be a National Merit Semifinalist. I’m just on the border (ffff 62 on writing…how…whatever). But, does that really mean something?

Actual SAT results would be helpful. More helpful would be consolidating all your ECs into the 6 you will put on your app, and describing them in a sentence or two. There are some great things on your list.

heh, my actual SATs are a bit stumblesauce. (see post about ridiculous testing conditions, incompetent proctors… and fire drills for further info)
but yeah, in reality, i’ve just been too busy or too lazy to study and have made the mistake of counting on that last chance SAT at the beginning of senior year for my best scores.

1st time: 700M (WHAT.) 740CR 730W
2nd time: 720M(alksjdasd) 710CR (WHAT.) 700W (what.) (this was the one with the chaos)

but yeah, I need to get my act together on that front for sure. Especially because of the not so hot GPA.

I actually loke your chances at most of the schools you’re applying, meaning I think that you are a strong candidate. The only tough spots are UCLA (OOS), Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, and maybe Cornell-but I do like your chances! :)

BTW, could you explain the biomedical engineering research you did to me? I want to major in this, and I don’t exactly understand how you got this oppurtunity-Thanks!

Could you chance me back, please?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/699897-am-i-track-ivies-duke-wake-vanderbilt-4.html

The clinic -

Our family friend owns a research lab, and at the time, I was considering bio engineering. He offered me a position and I did everything a lab technician had to do … minus the pay. If you make phone calls to a bigger hospital/research institution and demonstrate your interest, the opportunities should make themselves apparent. Good luck!

As for my opinion on your chances… it truly means nothing. I’m just a junior in high school who, though panics a ton about college admissions, doesn’t know anything about what it takes. It’s such a confusing process… you’d be a lot better off listening to the advice of someone who has a clue of what’s going on. That’s why I put up my own profile- so someone could give me a clue.

Oh, my post on a different area of the site with the same information got moved to this thread. Any further comments can just be posted on that one to make things easier. Thanks!

I think you’ve got a good shot at all of the listed schools, but I’m no expert, by any means.
To be honest, I just came here because of your thread title  Effigy! I’m a huge Andrew Bird fan - listening to Cataracts right now, in fact. You’re also into photography, cool.

I just went to see him in concert like 2 weeks ago. The man is a genius. Noble Beast is amazing.

^ Totally agree. Going to see him at Radio City in June, and I’m so excited!

He doesn’t take requests :frowning: I wanted him to play Masterfade or Lull so ridiculously badly, but whenever someone shouted something he was all MANN I GOT THE LIGHTING AND EVERYTHING ON A SCHEDULE

Aww really? :frowning: I really want to hear him play Lull - he has been doing that a bit recently- but most especially Why? It would be absolutely amazing to hear that live! Did he play that when you went?

he DID play Why? And it was breathtaking. My facebook status was 'damn you for being so easygoing" for a week afterward

^ awesome! but yeah, its such a pervasively passionate song… i’m in love with it.
anyway, I’ll stop hijacking your chances thread, hah. Is it alright if we continue this conversation via PM? :)

haha of course!

What the hell, you’re complaining about a 3.7+ UW GPA (“not so hot” - WTH) and over a 700 in each SAT section? Those are incredible scores. You have a very impressive application, and you will get into many prestigious universities.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so vain. It’s just that in my school, a 3.7 UW GPA might kick me out of the top 5% and the SAT scores are much lower than those of the majority of the students who are applying to the same schools as I am from my school. I’ve often heard that I “live in a bubble” because the competitiveness of my school makes us have such a distorted view of ourselves, but I know that colleges factor in the academic performances of others at the same school the applicant attends… and I don’t think that bodes well for me. :/

Dude, awesome portfolio…

And you do oratory?! Awesome… did you qualify to nationals? :D
