Hi, I was recently accepted into WPI for the CS program. Normally, I would be elated about this, but instead, I have been stressing out. My physics grade for this year is awful, and after having a discussion with my peers and my guidance counselor, it has come to my knowledge that I am not the only one with a terrible grade in that class.
Currently, with my two terms averaged together, I have a 76. This is only because I get 100s on everything except my exam scores which range from 20% - 50%. The average exam grade for my class last term was 34% (all averages combined). Kids in my class have had a breakdown midway through and many have turned to cheating for a good grade (which I haven’t done, but I’m so tempted to).
I’m so unbelievably upset. I cried for hours on end because of this class and now I’m realizing that this class can be the reason why my acceptance can be revoked. I been getting tutoring and seeking extra help, but his tests don’t relate the concepts currently being taught. I don’t blame him since this is his first year teaching, but it pains me to know that I am at the blunt end of his mistakes.
What’s the likelihood of my acceptance being revoked? Should I explain the situation to the admissions office?
Yes, I would explain your situation to the admissions office. Clearly you have done the right thing by not resorting to cheating! It is tough to be the best you can be once you go down that road.
I have asked the WPI admissions office to communicate with me so I can pass along advice on how to deal with it. They do not know who you are. With luck, we will have a response tomorrow.
Try some running! It clears the head once you get your wind!
Thank you so much for contacting them! I’m so happy right now, I’m actually crying tears since I been so stressed about this situation and feeling so hopeless.
And that sounds like great advice! I’m actually on the track and field team, so hopefully the practice sessions will help me reduce my anxiety, haha.
@stressies Deep breaths! And please trust me, your admission is not going be be rescinded if you get a C in physics.
@stressies
Here is the admissions office response:
When it comes to a question like the one below, she is not alone in this situation. Essentially admissions will look at the final transcript to be sure she is still in good standing and can graduate high school. It is pretty rare (if ever) we would revoke an admissions decision based on one poor grade BUT we don’t want to see them all over the place. I would encourage her to reach out to our office at Admissions@wpi.edu or call 508-831-5286 and explain the story. Typically we would want to know about these types of situations but ultimately we see them on the final high school transcript anyway.
She should not worry too much but reaching out to our office would not hurt.
How did the running work out?
@retiredfarmer Woo, that’s a relief! Thank you so much for contacting them!
And the running has been pretty good! It’s a stress reliever for sure and I noticed that the more I run, the more awake/energized I become so I been cutting back on my caffeine. Thanks for asking!
