I applied to Dickinson RD and I'm wondering if any current Dickinson students or EA admits who received a merit scholarship could tell me whether I'm in the running to get one as well based on what your stats were. My gpa is 3.85 UW, 5 Honors, 6 AP's before senior year (4s and 5s on all of them), 5 AP's this year, 2310 SAT (740M, 770 CR, 800 W). My rank is around the top 15% at a top 100 HS (whatever that means). Thank you for your help!

I would say you are. Your stats at a bit higher than the two people I know (one my kid, one another kid’s classmate) who got good merit. But both of them applied EA, so I am not sure what being in the RD pool would mean in the process. Where are you from? I think geographic diversity may play a role sometimes.

That’s good to know! I’m from Washington and as far as I know no one from my school applied. And if it makes a difference I’m black but I’m not African American; I’m a Canadian immigrant, so I don’t know how much that will help, if at all.

Update: I didn’t receive any scholarships…I was outright rejected. But I got into Amherst so I won’t complain :)

How can that be? Your stats are way above the upper 25% of Dickinson’s typical admitted student! My S was admitted EA with a 3.4 UW and a 30 ACT composite ! He’s white and in top 35% of his class. He did have a very rigorous course schedule but stats not close to the above poster’s stats! I simply don’t understand ?

You are overqualified. That’s why.
No need to be sorry( I know you aren’t.
Congrats you got admission from Amherst.

DD got an email tonight stating that she was accepted RD with Rush Scholarship(15K)
Very excited. Going to be tough as Muhlenberg and Gettysburg both offered more.

Was waitlisted with the following credentials… somewhat surprised, thought I’d get in:

SAT: 2000 (1330 Math and Verbal)
Unweighted GPA: 3.7’ish

I’ve taken multiple ‘honors’ courses throughout my HS career, and have taken 4 APs (US History, Government, English Lit, Statistics).

I did get a ‘C’ in 8th grade geometry second-semester, and I also struggled (and earned 3 ‘Cs’) during my second-semester of my sophomore year, when my school at that time implemented a 4x4 schedule (A.K.A. the schedule from hell). Prior to my junior year I transferred to a new school and have yet to earn anything but an ‘A’ since that move. It should also be noted that when I moved to my new school, my workload increased, and I introduced APs into my schedule, something I had yet to do.

My extracurriculars go as follows:

JV Soccer during 9th grade.
Cross-Country during 11th grade.
Endurance Team (varsity cycling team) during 11th and 12th grade.
Varsity Soccer during 12th grade.
I acted as President Obama during our school’s mock-presidential debate on election day of the 2012 election.
Did service work during 11th grade, which consisted of building running/biking/equestrian trails on my school’s campus, and during 12th grade I’ve been assisting in a classroom at a local elementary school.

D waitlisted - a surprise. SAT 2140, 3.6GPA UW - 5 APs this year, 3 last year, AP scholar, NHS. ECs, sports, job. you just never know! congrats to all accepted.

Wow they are some impressive stats for both of you. I am shocked that you were wait listed.

@mhyoon I don’t think there’s such a thing as “overqualified” for a liberal arts college like Dickinson. I’ll admit that I thought I had a great chance at Dickinson but I guess I’m not the type of person they’re looking for. Congrats to everyone who was admitted! You all deserve it.

Oscarlany - yes, there is such a thing as overqualified. Unless you have shown significant interest (like applying ED, rather than EA or RD, for instance) they know the strongest candidates are likely to end up somewhere else. This is sometimes called yield protection. They want to admit students who are likely to end up attending, so they reject some who they expect to get in elsewhere. Think about it - how many applications did you send in? If you were accepted to all schools, how many could you attend? When you reject some of them, does that mean they’re not good enough, or that one school was a better fit than the others?

Accepted!!
Was awarded John Dickinson Scholarship 20K! (40K in total) I was really excited!
Congrats to all accepted.

Rejected here, waitlisted at Gettysburg and accepted at F & M. I am an international student (pretty obvious if you can read my username :P), so maybe that had something to do with the random decisions. I also got into College of Wooster and Depauw University so far, but they did not give me enough aid unfortunately.

EDIT: F & M were very generous with the aid though, should have made that clearer…

@CTScoutmom I guess that makes sense. I don’t like the practice at all though because just because I don’t apply ED to a school somewhere it doesn’t mean that I’m not interested. It could just be the case that I haven’t competed my standardized tests or need to evaluate what makes the most sense financially after receiving ALL my decisions. I mean what happens when someone gets waitlisted and/or rejected to all his or her reach and match schools as well as by schools that were supposed to be less selective just because they thought the student wouldn’t attend? If the student clearly didn’t put in the effort to show interest I’d understand but I spent a good amount of time on my “why Dickinson” essay and occasionally emailed my admissions counselor to ask questions. I might not have shown that Dickinson was my first choice, because I don’t have one, but I didn’t treat it as a completely safety or as an afterthought, so I was a bit taken aback by my decision and would’ve thought that I’d a least get a waitlist.

That does happen, which is why it is advisable to have at least one guaranteed admission on your list, or some sort of backup plan.

Oscarlany, just for reference, I think Dickinson accepts a very high proportion of their incoming class through early action. When they get to Regular decision I think spots are much more competitive. I was accepted Early Action with a 20,000 $ merit scholarship with stats similar to (and maybe a little lower than yours). I doubt I would have gotten that scholarship if I had applied rd. Congrats on Amherst, thats awesome, it sounds like you are all set! :)
