Likely Call?

One night last week, I got a call from a Harvard alum in my state who, to my surprise, wanted an interview over the phone. Though I was pleasantly taken aback, I didn't think the process was anything special until he told me he was calling at the urging of the admissions committee. The conversation--it went about an hour and a half--was superb and, as we closed, he outlined the process of admissions and said I'd been picked for continuation. The alum (who had also served on the admcom for a brief time) told me not to read too much into the call but assured me multiple times that this was a good sign. He would even use phrases like "When you're at Harvard, you'll see that..."

The whole thing, quite an encouragement, led me to wonder: Has anyone else been contacted similarly? And even if not, should I interpret this to be as heartening as I'm wanting it to be?

No. I certainly have not been contacted in such a manner. However, you can add it as one of your "tip" factors in your application. =) Don't read TOO much into it though, because if you expect too much and your expectations aren't met, you're bound to be disappointed.

hmm...not that its true..what if some evil human being was playing a joke on u?...anyway..it sounds cool..GL WITH EVERYTHING

Sounds like a typical "second interview" situation, although done by phone rather than in person.

The "great one" has returned. All hail! ^^

It indicates you're on the bubble. You have a better than average chance of admission, but things still could go either way. Best of luck!

halehawthorne...what were ur stats/ECs

It could also mean that your alumni interviewer never got around to filing your report (this happened to my daughter), or the admissions office lost it, so they are scrambling to try to put together some sort of decent interview report for you.

I had a similar thing happen to me...I was contacted by the international admissions director (?) who said she wanted to ask me some follow-up questions since she'll be sitting in the committee fighting for her fav applicants...
it was actually longer than my first interview but nevertheless im not reading too much into this either.
good luck everyone!

OMG!!! I was CONTACTED! But i wasn't home!!!

AHHH!! what does that mean?

it means you missed it. :)

Missed what? Does Harvard contact kids early to let them know they got in?

No. That would be a violation of the agreement of the Ivy League. Officially, they are not allowed to notify any applicant before 4/1. This is why there are "likely" letters/e-mails.

I don't think it was a likely call for me though. It was a "hey, you're on the borderline...tell me more about yourself?"

The admission officer got back to me. We talked for 15 minutes. I don't know if that is a good thing or bad...I can look at it both ways.

She said "It's neat talking to you" which usually is bad because when I went to my Berkeley interview, the interviewered said, "It's nice meeting you. If you decide NOT to go to Berkeley next year, contact me first. I hope to see you next year." So...I don't know how to deal. I think it's mean I was just rejected from Harvard...I was on the borderline, but after the convo, they don't want me :(

eek...pessimism....BAH! We'll see April 1/March 31

:) Hang in there, guys.

hey, its better than not being contacted at all :(

I got a second interview, and it was really weird because it seemed like she was really trying to make everything an issue and get me to speak my opinions on it, like mention a topic and ask if this is unfair or not. I spoke for a little while, but I'm not really into debates. She asked me if I like talking politics, and I said that I didn't. I don't see the point of the interview because besides this debate/controversy issue aspect of it, she asked the exact same, boring questions that the first interviewer asked me. I don't remember what she said at the end of the interview. It's a complete blank because I had a study-abroad program interview an hour after the Harvard one, and now I'm getting them mixed up.

no call :(

when did they start doing this call? my phone service was cut off for 8 days in early march :(

I don't think it's a likely call...

I think it's a HEY YOU'RE ON THE BORDERLINE, SELL YOURSELF TO US BECAUSE WE HAVEN'T DECIDED YET!!!

My friend never got a call and he got in....so don't fret guys.
