Hey all-
I received my likely for lwt. rowing from Georgetown in January, have you ever heard of a likely recipient NOT getting accepted? I am freaking out because my academics are more than good enough for me to have been accepted early, but I got deferred, and the coach had to offer me a likely after my deferral. Is there still a chance that I'm going to get rejected??? I'm freaking out!

I’m thinking … that you got deferred and the coach said “hey. I need this kid. What’s the deal?” Admissions said “Oh. OK. Well he’s in our good pile, just wanted to see what else turned up, but you want him? Sure, here’s a likely letter. He’ll get his admission letter in March/April if everything continues to check out.”

I hope that’s what’s going on behind the scenes. But, just in case, I hope you have a Plan B. Every so often there are kids who get likelys followed by rejections. But it’s unusual. I only know of one, and it wasn’t Georgetown.

As for the Ivy League, a likely letter is relatively binding on the institution. INdeed, the Ivy league site says

“Admissions Offices at each Ivy school may offer some athletic and other candidates a “likely” letter, which has the effect of a formal letter of admission provided the candidate continues to have a satisfactory secondary school experience.”

[The Ivy League](http://www.ivyleaguesports.com/information/psa/index)

HEYY!!! aren’t the coaches awesome there?! I went on an OV in october but ended up choosing Princeton over Gtown. Looks like we’ll be competitors next year!

Anyway, I am also freaking out about admissions decision even though I got a LL too. I’ve looked up so much information, and from what I gather, as long as you don’t get failing grades or get arrested you should be fine.

The OP is applying to Georgetown, not an Ivy, so I think the use of the words “likely letter” isn’t precise, or at least we can’t assume it means the same thing at Georgetown as it does in the Ivies. OP, I also think cnp55 got it exactly right. Hang in there. I know the wait is long…

My kid was told by the coach at the time that Georgetown admits its athletic recruits RD. Are you in contact with the coach? Normally, coaches send regular email updates about the team, etc.
