Likely Letter Came Today

Taking a look at this thread : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/duke-university/464430-minority-student-likely-letter.html

(contains about 3 years worth of classes highlighting when they received an invite)

I would say around late February, early March

But then again the same applied for non-minority applicant’s likely letters and we have multiple students receiving them in early February so who really knows!?!?

Can likely letters be sent to deferred applicants? I doubt I am even going to be considered again, but a man can hope. Also, do mid-year reports need to be in? My school’s semester finished a week ago and grades were due this past Wednesday, so Duke has not received my report yet.

In TN, just got mine today too, no mid-year report or interview yet.
2350 SAT, school doesn’t rank. Three subject tests, 750+ (no 800’s though).
Had a bunch of leadership/community service-related extracurriculars, wrote my Why Duke on my passion for service and my nonprofit.
Asian female who will need tons of FA :frowning:

Super excited though! I wonder if this is a good sign for qualifying for the Robertson Scholarship though…hmm.

Got mine in TX today :)

asdf22: Duke does not admit based on major or by department. If you are admitted to the Pratt school of engineering, you may choose any engineering major you wish.

I guess I got a likely letter too…and I’m from CA!

Congrats all who received LL from Duke.

I have heard that some of the LL recipients are considered as the scholarship candidates and this information should be on the letter. Can anyone confirm this? What are your Blue Devil Day dates?

Thank you

My letter said nothing about scholarships. Blue Devil Days are 4/09-10 and 4/15-16.

mine said nothing about scholarships either

Thanks SBR.

No scholarship stuff on mine either. Too bad the Robertson Scholarship is so limited.

I’m hoping these likely letters mean were top candidates for the BN and AB Duke scholarships.

not necessarily related from my experience/time here…but wishing you each the best…also recommend that you each hang in there because surprises are part of this process. Disappointments and surprises are to be expected. And Duke admittees are a pool of equals so it is wise to view yourself in that light and to focus on your Estimated cost of attendance and your willingness to pay it.

I know that Duke does admit somewhat by major - they have to admit a freshman class that contributes to a balanced university community. Also, they are actively trying to build their fine arts departments so if you are a dancer, musician or artist with great academic credentials, you have a very good chance of being accepted (per session we sat in with the Undergrad Dean of Admissions when my S was at Duke TIP). Also, if you’re a great football player

Anyone know if being a Nat. Merit Scholar Finalist gives you an edge?

probably not a whole lot of an edge if any

eaglessoar: when I said Duke doesn’t admit by major, I meant that unlike at other schools, you do not apply directly to individual departments and have acceptances from the same. However, as you said, It’s officially acknowledged by Duke admissions that accepted classes are “shaped” to balance out Trinity/Pratt, science/humanities, etc etc as much as possible. But again, this “shaping” is probably not as precise as by major or department.

Duke does admit you to Pratt vs Trinity.

This LL made my day a million times better :)

Would a likely letter for a URM mean good chances for the Reginaldo Howard Scholarship? fingers crossed

Got my likely letter last night

Stats:

SAT I: 2340 (780 m, 760 cr, 800 w, 10 essay)
SAT II: (800 math 2, 790 physics, 730 bio)
rank: 4/61, 94.04 average
Classes: IB Curriculum, (HL: math, biology, history, english - SL: physics, french)

extracurriculars:

varsity track and cross country (not good enough for D1 college though)
jazz band
professional Greek folk dancing

honors/awards:

school athlete of the year (not that impressive in a class of 61)
national merit semifinalist

race/sex: White male (Greek), not 1st gen, no other hooks I can think of

applied to pratt. wrote an essay about how my professional dancing background gave me the creativity of an artist, which I could synthesize with the skills of a scientist in order to solve problems in ways nobody else could think of. I thought it was decent, but not great.

didn’t see any of my recs, but the teachers and I are tight.

so I guess they send 'em to ordinary folks too!

Congrats! They look for well-rounded people too rather than academic robots. Statistically, the dean said they usually only admit 1 out of 4 students with perfect test scores.
