Likely Letter - Coming Out at March

Does Duke send out "likely letter" to applicants in March? If so, do people ,who receive these letters, like almost 100% sure they will get in in early April?

yes........

I received one on March 1st, and it's just like an acceptance letter. It can only be revoked with significant personal or academic decline, such as a suspension, arrest, lie on the application, or terrible final transcript.

What were your stats/ECs, if you don't mind?

hyperpuritan - I don't really know why I got one since I had nothing particularly unique.

Standardized tests (SAT/SAT II) about 760 average per section.
GPA 4.0 UW (#1 rank from challenging high school).
Most challenging courseload, AP exams all 4 or 5, National Merit.
Average (at best) EC's with some work experience, no real leadership.
Also legacy at Duke and strong interview.

so what does a likely letter say? and why send one?

I got mine in mid-February. I know Trinity sends likely letters; I'm not sure if Pratt does.

Pongo- "Greetings from Duke University! I am delighted to tell you that the Admissions Committee has recently reviewed your application, and we want to share with you the good news that we consider you one of our very best candidates this year. Indeed, as long as you maintain the academic and personal standards reflected in your application, the Admissions Committee expects to formally offer you admission later this spring." :)

Usually the people who get likely letters are very qualified and have excellent chances at pretty much anywhere. Likely letters are a way to attract a student's attention to a university (s)he might otherwise turn down.

gah, i want one. ::whines::. Although, i don't think they'd ever have to worry about me turning duke down.

Although I will say that a friend of mine who got a likely letter was rejected at every other school he applied to that was at or above Duke's caliber.

what were her stats? was she a legacy/recruited athlete?

He wasn't a legacy or an athlete. Stats were good enough for a likely letter. :p

a likely letter from Yale: http://www.tdy-perdiem.com/rsi/yale1.htm

wow i'd probably go into a coma or something if i got a letter like that.

Ah, yes. I remember Byerly posted that link last year. Notice that she got into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Penn, and Columbia.

Does anyone know where Connie Leung decided to go??

Harvard, where she was accepted EA

HopefulDove, how many schools did you apply to? I've seen this thread in almost every board for Ivies and Top Universities.
