Likely Letter for Ivy Schools.

Re: the Likely Letter: Thanks for sharing, “Thanksforsharing” and “Heights” et al. Coach contacted my athlete today just to offer reassurance of full support and that application is complete. Said “our fingers are crossed” which made my kid a bit nervous again–but at this point, everything does! These forums are so helpful to parents. It’s kind of like reading and re-reading “What to Expect when you’re Expecting” during those long nine months. We’re currently in the “past the due date” chapter…

I bet the coach just meant that his fingers were crossed that things would finally start moving along–it’s out of his control at this point too. But that wording would have made my kid nervous too. Let us know when the labor pains finally end!

I agree. Coach probably meant “fingers crossed that Admissions now moves quickly.” It doesn’t seem probable that you would be where you are if there were any real doubt that the LL will be issued. As I said earlier, it’s now more a matter of when than if. Good luck and let us know when you hear.

Osasmom, I feel your pain. Kid has committed, common app is in, admissions meeting next week. We really want a definitive answer next week so that if something goes wrong we can move to back-up before Nov. 1. I hope I am being paranoid here, but kids has told all coaches (because they asked) that they weren’t the 1st choice school, and we are more nervous by the day.

Status on school admissions page says recommendations and school report not received, but GC says they were and will probably catch up over the weekend. Probably. If they don’t catch up, we may miss another week.

I will sleep for a week when this is over…

The coach called this morning! Likely Letter in the mail!!! Thank you all for the encouragement. My kid is a Brown Bear and walking on air today!

Congratulations, that is awesome news!!!

Congratulations! Brown is a great place. Have fun celebrating!!

Congratulations! So happy to hear your good news. :)

awesome. Have a great weekend!

I am an alumni interviewer for an Ivy, and likely letters, once you get the email or physical paper letter, are binding to the same extent as an acceptance. You are in (yes, if you did like commit a crime or drop your grades significantly, they reserve the right to not admit, but that would be true for an admit as well). They would NOT give a likely letter unless they were abundantly sure you will be admitted once acceptances go out.

At least several Ivies are giving likely letters to non-athletes, to “be fairer”.

My son attended three Ivy League football camps last summer as a Sophomore graduating in 2015. Coaches from all three schools told him they were interested and to stay in touch. They began sending him personal mail after the season ended with all three asking for his transcripts and most recent game and highlight video. He talked to all three by phone and has received positive encouragement that they are still very interested after reviewing his film and transcripts. My son hasn’t made his mind up which school he prefers and will again attend all three camps this summer. I’m assuming if any or all are still interested when they see him this summer that they would simply ask him to submit an application to admission. Right? I’m just assuming it’s all that can happen…just a request from the coach for him to apply. Can he apply to all three possibly receiving three Likely Letters? Or is he forced to make his decision during the summer, applying only to one and hoping that works out? (I told you I was confused!) Just seems like he could receive an invitation to apply from one school at camp…then apply…only to receive a second invitation to apply from school number two and then have school three ask him to apply a week after that.

I’m not sure of the football timetable, but in my kid’s sport, after the offers of official Ivy visits are extended in the summer before senior year, and after those visits are made in the fall, then the athlete needs to decide which one, and only one, to apply to Early Decision with the promise of the coach’s full support/request for Likely Letter.

cocotoo,

Admissions for Ivy league schools generally will not issue a likely letter during the ED period unless the athlete applies ED/SCEA. This means that you really can only apply to one Ivy at a time during the fall. It is best to wait until after the academic pre read is done and then ask for a financial aid pre read prior to submitting a ED/SCEA application in the early fall. You can ask to have the LL issued shortly after Oct. 1st and if this does not happen there would still be time to apply to another school. Also note that if a coach promises to support an athlete with a LL after a positive pre read then almost all coaches will keep that promise.

“Almost” is the key word there. S was promised full support and LL by Ivy coach, and as of today, coach “doesn’t know what happened” to the LL. ED/EA decisions are out soon so there is little to be done at this point except some mad scrambling for plan B and plan C. Another reminder that coaches are coaches and admissions is in another office.

^Poobah - that’s lousy, I feel for you. Did coach just call and say, ‘sorry - admissions didn’t green-light the LL and I have no idea why’?

Hey Varska: Thanks for the reply. Coach didn’t call, just a recent email exchange initiated by my S. It might still work out after all, but it might not. I’m sure the coach did fully support as promised, but admissions may have balked. We’ll find out soon.

Ah, well let’s hope it’s just a bureaucratic delay in admissions. Stressful times, to be sure - best of luck.

Thank you! It did work out in the end. Admission. But never a likely letter. The coach said “no worries” but until that acceptance came through, there were worries. A long five weeks!

Congrats Poolpoobah!

Great news, poobah - a load off your mind I’m sure. Congrats!
