Likely Letter Forecasting

I am very happy that I have received a likely letter from UVa. However, this makes me wonder what other schools I can get into. Does getting a likely letter from UVa mean that you have a good chance at getting into an Ivy League school (Princeton or Dartmouth) ?

The likely letter from UVA doesn’t say much at all about your chances at the higher ivys (HYSP), but (totally postulating here) it may be a good sign for the “lower” ivys, say, upenn, dartmouth(?). But again, this is just my guess, based on my own stats.

Getting a likely letter from one place does not mean anything when comparing to other colleges. The schools mostly have their own way of choosing people.

I for one do not see the point of likely letters. (I mean, how are they good for the applicants?)

^^ For me it’s nice to know that somewhere wants you. And also it can be great for planning those April visits. So in some ways it just makes those who don’t get likely letters stress, and it may make those who do get them slack off, but it is nice to just know sometimes.

it makes me lean towards that school because I know they’re interested in me instead of biting my nails until april 1st.

oh and incase you’re wondering, UVA likely letter != mit acceptance

Is that java code?

hmm, yes !=: is not equal to

i think it would have to be an OOS likely letter to try to predict anything. OOS acceptance rate is a little under 30%… i think? so that’s like closest to Cornell I guess, but I really don’t think a likely should “forecast” any other acceptances or even an acceptance from another school.

I am OOS, but I know that an acceptance from one school doesn’t mean an acceptance from another. I just wanted to see what people had to say.

I am OOS and recieved a likely letter from UVA, no acceptance from mit though.

This is a new one…“a likely letter”? When did these start coming out and were they snail mail or email?
What clues, exactly, do they give? Is it we like you but don’t love you? What’s the correlation between getting one and getting in…and not getting one and getting in?

Dean J has postings on this subject on her blog at the UVA website called Notes from Peabody that answer your questions.

I wasn’t aware of what a likely letter was until a few days ago due to my CC browsing. Turns out my parents had my UVA likely letter sitting around from over a month ago. -_- UVA likely !=MIT or CalTech admission that’s for sure.
