I was just wondering..
did a majority of people who got a likely letter from Dartmouth got accepted to any HYPS eventually?
I know its such a false hope but being the top of the applicants for Dartmouth makes me feel like I am more likely to get accepted to my dream schools.
Or.. is it just that Dartmouth sends a lot of likely letters to people?

Three people from my school got likely letters from Dartmouth last year. Two of them ended up rejected at H/Y/P, another ended up rejected at Y/P, waitlisted at Harvard and got into (and ended up going to) MIT. I know this is probably not what you were hoping to hear, but worst-case scenario, you end up at Dartmouth, which is an amazing school--both of the two people from my school who ended up at Dartmouth this year love it there.

I agree with the above. I think that different schools are looking for different things.

haha yeah.. well I will be uber happy to go to Dartmouth but I just can't help hping for the glorious oh-so-great HYPS acceptacne..

Certainly means you have a real shot at the others. I got a likely and did get into the other ivies I applied to: H and P.

i was wondering this same exact thing.
omg suze that would be like the perfect scenario for me crosses fingers
maybe those other 3 kids were just really unlucky...i would think that if one is good enough for dartmouth one is good enough for HYP

"if one is good enough for dartmouth one is good enough for HYP"

well, let's say.. if one is good enough to be CHOSEN for dartmouth likelies, one MIGHT have chance at HYP ...
To be honest, now I getting a little skeptical. Maybe Darthmouth sends those letters to those who are less likely to get into HYP so that Dartmouth can have a great shot getting them .
haha, just my theory :P

highly doubt it. i think you're overanalyzing the situation.

I HOPE SO D:.... i will be devastated if that turns out true

anyway, you should feel happy as it is getting a dartmouth likely letter. dartmouth is a great school

Apparently not in the opinion of zzibuya.

You might check the admissions results posts for the schools in question. My son went to Dartmouth and my daughter will start at Princeton in the fall. So I have a record of reading their admissions threads.
The difference that I see is this- Dartmouth admittees are very, very impressive and you can see why they were taken. Princeton will reject some people who it just seems did everything humanly possible and you are left scrathing your head as to why they were not accepted. That happened much less with Dartmouth. I think it's just a question of numbers.
If you end up at Dartmouth you are almost certain to be very, very happy.

Yeah, I totally agree with you danas (and what you say makes sense). now that i think of it, it doesn't make a difference either way. My guidance counselor keeps shoving this down my throat...it's not where you go that matters but what you make of it.

well to clarify things: I never said dartmouth isn't a great school. I already mentioned how happy and excited I was getting that letter. but I just wondered my chance of getting into those HYPS that I also applied, knowing it is generally harder to get in.

anyways, it is such a great relief getting that letter. I truly appreciate D's early encouragement like this! <33

i'm going to stand up for zzibuya here. i dont think she ever meant to imply that dartmouth isn't a mad cool place. if her dream school is one of the HYPS well, so be it. i'm sure you will do awesomely zz and you'll be great wherever you go.

thank you , morangotango xD you too!

The reality is that there are a lot more people who get into Dartmouth and not HYP (myself included) than the other way around. Dartmouth, rightly or wrongly, has a lot of Harvard/Yale rejects... although there are definitely some who chose Dartmouth over these schools.

The reality is that EVERYONE applies to HYPS, because they are HYPS. They are collectively thought to be "the best". I think it's foolish that these are dream schools, simply because I think most people are most attracted by prestige/name brand factor than any other specific reason. I digress.

The likely letter for Dartmouth can't be extended to HYPS. Each school looks for different things. You could very will get accepted to these schools, too, but I don't think you can draw any other conclusions than one: you're probably accepted at D.

Hehe. I applied to Dartmouth, Brown, and Columbia. I cancelled my Harvard and Princeton apps before I completed them, even after I visited Harvard!

Just happy for being accepted to Dartmouth already!

i didn't apply to HYPS hehe...
in fact, dartmouth is the only ivy i applied to. in fact, dartmouth is really the only school i applied to that people actually recognized besides vassar. i really didn't apply based on prestige at all. i looked solely at the program and the whether or not i'd be happy there.

Hehe. I'm seriously thinking I should give you my likely letter, 'lo.
