Likely Letter-HOW Likely?

Hello,

I just received a letter from Columbia stating that they were very impressed with my performance and I'd been granted 'likely candidate' status. I am not athlete, but I did I apply for Biochemistry major and am female. Basically, I was told to expect a positive admissions letter if I continued to perform well (as evidenced by a mid-year report). I wonder, have any of the current students received something similar before their acceptance? To what extent should I take this as an 'acceptance'? I don't want my hopes to be crushed, although I never in a million years expected this.

Thank you

when did u find out? u applied to CC right?

I applied RD to Columbia University using the common application. I received an email today.

Wow. My shock seems to have resulted in word omission on that first post. I apologize if it seems a bit incoherent.

Congrats! What are your stats?

Congratulations. You will be accepted unless your mid-year report was quite poor.

I, too, received a likely letter in my inbox tonight, which was quite a relief; it is my first non-safety-school “acceptance.” My stats are in the Yale results thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/11660815-post11.html</a></p>

I got a likely too! For people that want full text, here it is. It was a nice surprise considering I didn’t even think I could get in. I worked my butt off and pulled 7 A’s first semester, I know senioritis won’t keep me out of college!

Dear therazor302,

I am writing to inform you that your application to Columbia University has been carefully evaluated and that you have earned designation as a likely candidate for admission to Columbia College. As long as our midyear review finds that you are maintaining your current level of academic progress and good standing, you can expect to receive favorable word when admissions packets are mailed on March 30th.

The Committee on Admissions was deeply impressed with your scholastic and personal achievements, and we look forward to all you might add to our rich campus community. I offer you my sincere congratulations on your accomplishments thus far and eagerly anticipate those that lie ahead.

If we can be of any help to you, please do not hesitate to contact the Admissions Office at ugrad-ask@columbia.edu or 212-854-2522. Please save these dates for Columbia College Days on Campus for admitted students: April 10th and 11th or April 17th and 18th, when events will include a hosted overnight visit, a chance to sit in on classes, tours of New York City and much more. I hope you can join us.

All of us here wish you the best during the exciting months ahead.

Sincerely yours,

Jessica Marinaccio
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

I received a likely letter to SEAS as well two weeks ago. Columbia is one of my reach schools, so the letter was very unexpected but delightful!

I wrote a FAQ for the Yale forum but most (if not all) applies for you as well:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/804816-quick-facts-about-likely-letters.html</a></p>

Look specifically at point number six. Congrats!

Congratulations!

very. congrats. let me know if you have any questions.

admissionsgeek…question for you please.Columbia hasn’t received/tracked many RD applicants SAT scores yet(Thread:Columbia Application Tracking System).Would be another matter if it was a stray issue, but many applicants SAT scores are missing. So my thinking is that calling the admissions office at this point wouldn’t make sense(it’s obvious they are floored and still in the process of sorting stuff, last thing they need is for hundreds of kids calling to make things worse). My concern is this,is there enough time left for them to get the scores and then review the applications?Or do you think they are going to just process with whatever they have on file and be done? That kind of half-hearted review would be a bit unfair, wouldn’t it?

there is more than enough time (over a month) before they make final determinations, but don’t wait TOO long, i’d say call now, they can deal with it now if you let them, if you wait they might not be able to.

adgeek,
Isn’t it more likely that Columbia just hasn’t updated the tracker? If Columbia really hasn’t received many RD applicants’ SAT scores, I think they’d contact those applicants.

adgeek…pwoods has a point,it’s just that the system is not updated yet,the tracking website says this:
“We will also notify you of any missing credentials required to complete your application. You will have ample time to send us any missing items.”
Do we need to worry if we haven’t been intimated about missing items?I believe we would get on their nerves if we did, that’s my thinking!!!

there is the a) be nice and considerate to columbia stance and let them be, b) i have to confirm things.

they may have items that aren’t on the tracker, and if you want to confirm that, i don’t think that is a problem.

columbia does send out an email and letter (usually) about missing items in late feb (email) and mid march (letter).

You’re absolutely right. For me,point(a) was overshadowing point(b) and keeping me from bothering them. But since I’m starting to really get concerned now,I think I should let (b) take the lead.
I’ll try calling them tomorrow.
Thanks.

I am also a RD applicant and my SAT and ACT scores have all been updated…and that they’ve all been received…reading these positive emails is making me so nervous all I’ve received from them is an email regarding my NonCustodial Parent Profile which has become an issue because of my family situation. We thought that email about fin aid might be a good sign because why would they be going through all of the extra stuff? Idk, just a thought.

^janeej…I’m sorry I’m a bit confused, are you saying your SAT & ACT scores on the tracking website show as updated,or not updated?Which is it?
Thanks.

I applied to Columbia (Gen Studies) RD, and I never received a “likely” email. In fact, I received no email, likely or unlikely. Does that mean that they’re still reviewing me or that I’m most likely not going to get in? I’d really appreciate any responses; I’m kind of freaking out!!
