Likely Letter in Early Admissions?

I’ve heard that in college admissions there are many selective institutions that send out likely letters to the students they believe are the top applicants before Regular Decision letters in March/April, like around January/February. However, I was wondering if likely letters are also sent to certain students after they apply during the early admissions cycle, or is this something that happens only during Regular Decision?

Great question. We wonder the same. We know someone who received an email from their ED regional admissions rep after they read the ED application. Said they enjoyed reading through it and getting to know them better, etc. and ended it with a positive supportive statement.

What school was this for?

In the ED/EA round, likely letters, for those colleges that use them, go to recruited athletes only.

While nice, not a likely letter.
