Did anyone else receive a Dartmouth likely letter today? I got one and I was super psyched

congratulations!!! that’s amazing :D

did you get it by mail??

I got one today too! I’m so excited! Congrats to you! And yes, it was by mail.

chassiecrane, you were admitted to yale scea…how come the dartmouth likely letter?

see

^ How do the two contradict each other anyway?

apparently chassiecrane is not yet satisfied with a yale admission. so she applies to other ivies.

If this is an athletic Likely Letter, then the way I understand it, the coach who facilitated that Likely Letter thorough admissions only has a limited number to give. If you got one, someone else didn’t. I thought they were given with the understanding that the recipient was definitely going to matriculate at that college. It’s a way for the Ivies to compete with Div. I schools that give athletic scholarships. Since the Ivies don’t offer athletic scholarships, and therefore also don’t offer a letter of intent (which is an agreement between athlete and university tying the acceptance of an offer of admission to a specific athletic scholarship), they substitute the LL so an athlete doesn’t have to pass up a D-I scholarship (and offer of admission) from, say, Duke or Stanford or Northwestern and take a flier on Regular Decision admission to the Ivy institution of their choice. I’m not sure what SCEA is, but it sounds like you’re entering Dartmouth next fall, right?

^Yale SCEA (Single Choice Early Action) is a non-binding Early Action with Yale. Also a Dartmouth “likely letter” mailed this time of year does not mean chassiecrane is an athlete, but the admissions office was so impressed with their application they decided to let her know early. The likely letter you are thinking, the one that goes to athletes/developmental kids, is mailed out in early-mid October.

Congratulations!

As indicated by other posters you have already been accepted by Yale and now a likely letter from Dartmouth. I’m sure you’ll receive many more acceptances.

P.S. Dartmouth is better than the rest. :D

No they aren’t. Sure the coach can only call in so many favors with admissions but it’s the coaches way of pursuing his/her best recruits. There’s nothing unethical about the student currying as many good offers as possible. There’s no quid pro quo here. Student isn’t bound in the slightest.

Hmmmm… too late to edit post #9. I seem to have been mistaken. Likely Letters are issued by coaches for students who have shown commitment to the school as well. There does seem to be some level of commitment sought from the student before one is issued…

Not everyone who gets into Yale goes there. I, for one, didn’t, and several people on my floor alone didn’t either.

That’s awesome! When was yours postmarked? My letter says January 27, 2011. I thought they didn’t normally send these letters out so early.

Maybe it’s because of how early you sent your application in. I remember I sent mine in around late September or so.

BTW, does anyone know what percentage of Dartmouth’s likely letters are athletic (I know mine wasn’t :P)? And how many did they send out this year?

i’m kinda shocked by the Dartmouth letter but yes, I was accepted to Yale SCEA. I’m just psyched, I thought i was throwing my net wayyyyyy too far out to dream of an Ivy. I’m not sure when it was dated, or how they are issued. I didn’t really court either school, though I like them both. I was too afraid to hope that much.

also, i’m no athlete at all, lol, except for academic sports. I compete in Latin Jeopardy, if that counts as a sport.
