If this is an athletic Likely Letter, then the way I understand it, the coach who facilitated that Likely Letter thorough admissions only has a limited number to give. If you got one, someone else didn’t. I thought they were given with the understanding that the recipient was definitely going to matriculate at that college. It’s a way for the Ivies to compete with Div. I schools that give athletic scholarships. Since the Ivies don’t offer athletic scholarships, and therefore also don’t offer a letter of intent (which is an agreement between athlete and university tying the acceptance of an offer of admission to a specific athletic scholarship), they substitute the LL so an athlete doesn’t have to pass up a D-I scholarship (and offer of admission) from, say, Duke or Stanford or Northwestern and take a flier on Regular Decision admission to the Ivy institution of their choice. I’m not sure what SCEA is, but it sounds like you’re entering Dartmouth next fall, right?
