Likely Letter!

Majors are not a factor. As a previous poster noted, most students change their minds a few times in college.

Interest is not a factor. We implemented a registration system because many visitors seemed very uncomfortable with not being able to “sign in” and because tracking would allow us to do research about how effective our different programs are.

I don’t think you can call those who received the letters “overachievers”. I think driven students would fit the bill.

Or just very good students! My son received one on Tuesday, and he was very happy. However, being from OOS, it will be very expensive for us compared to the offers he has received from some really nice private schools. Unfortunately, Likely Letter = Unlikely Choice

VHFather. Please don’t make a decision by its sticker price. UVa is very generous with Financial Aid package. You should definitely wait and give it a chance!

Yea, VHFather, how do you know any school will give you more aid than UVA? Nothing has been released yet…

Has anyone received both a LL and a call? I’m a little worry about this call status.

I did but I don’t think the call means anything - I think it is more of a courtesy thing to prospective students.

UVA students are on Spring Break this week so I assumed there’d be no calls until they’re back.

Ohh really? And I thought I didn’t get the call because I was denied :D

Definition of OVERACHIEVER:

One who achieves success over and above the standard or expected level especially at an early age

Examples of OVERACHIEVER:

She is an overachiever who plans to attend a top college

Be and overachiever and BE PROUD! :)

… and I happened to refer to those that get accepted, but don’t get a LL, as overachievers… that would be you UVAorBust… Right? Think positive

I’m just guessing that he won’t get a full tuition ride, like he has at another school. It’s unfortunate, as UVA was his first choice coming into the spring. Oh well…he really does like it there. He was a semi-finalist for the TJ scholarship, but he didn’t move on from there.
We’ll see what happens.

VHFather, he probably will not get a full ride, but AccessUVA is a great program designed to meet 100% of demonstrated need for students. I’m only able to go to school even now (I currently attend community college) on financial aid, but there are so many options if your son is serious about UVA.

That said, being debt-free coming out of school these days is a gift, and if the difference in education quality isn’t much, a lot of times it’s worth it to take the tuition ride. Good luck to you and your son with making a decision come April!

Stay positive, everyone. The way I see it, UVA is using Likely Letters to try to attract the most qualified applicants who may have real chances at Ivy League or equivalent schools. These applicants are above the “UVA range” and might be more attracted to these so-called higher level schools. The adcom wants to try to get these applicants to seriously consider UVA. However, don’t fret if you don’t get a Likely Letter even if you feel like you are going to get in/really really want to get in. They wouldn’t send out likely letters to applicants who are exactly within range for UVA, because they know those applicants are most likely already considering UVA. Furthermore, if for some reason the adcom is well aware that UVA is the applicant’s number one choice, they might feel no need to use a Likely Letter to try and persuade the applicant into considering UVA. So if you are just right based on stats, or feel like you are just right, I honestly wouldn’t even worry.
Also, IF for some reason they are going to notify early, I would expect that it might be on a Friday so the admissions office is not swamped with calls until the following Monday. This is what UNC-Chapel Hill did this year for Early Action students. I can’t be bothered to go back and see if UVA’s notification days of previous years were indeed Fridays, but it makes sense. Anyway, just a guess!!!

I think we notified on a Thursday in 2009 and maybe on a Friday last year.

When the printers start churning out letters, the women who run that part of the operation can tell us when we’ll be ready to release the decisions.

I’m ready for the butter to be churned!

Congrats to everyone!!! I really dont think that not getting one means anything, i didnt even know that they existed until i heard people talking about them at school. I got one and thought it was just basic college mail, but this thread helped clear up some of my questions! after seeing everyone elses stats im actually pretty surprised i got one, you guys are pretty amazing. here are my stats if anyone’s interested:

Wait… are the 1 2 3 3 3 your scores?

Only on this website would a 3 on the BC Calculus AP exam cause gasps. Sigh…oh kids…

Being from in-state where a bunch of my older friends have gone onto UVA, it seems that you are more likely to be an Echols/Rodman scholar if you get a phone call.
