<p>I have seen the term "Likely Letter" mentioned in various posts.</p>

<p>What EXACTLY is that?</p>

<p>And if you get a "Likely Letter" from a top school, what does that mean?</p>

<p>Basically, it’s a letter (and sometimes a call beforehand) stating that as long as the student maintains his or her grades, etc. that he or she is a sure admit. I watched a video by Dartmouth once, where an admissions officer said that it is basically an acceptance, but to a very small part of the population that will eventually be admitted in March/April.</p>

<p>Basically, it’s a letter a few weeks before acceptances come out that says</p>

<p>"When the acceptances come out, it is very likely that you will be accepted.’ Schools send out limited numbers of them (last year, for example, Cornell sent to some URMs and Female Engineers. Don’t read anything into not getting one if you don’t.</p>

<p>In this case – likely basically means ‘you’re in’ unless you do something that would probably get you rescinded if we’ve accepted you.</p>
