hey... i got one too... =) ?

How many likely letters does Duke send out?

they say ~350

Sigh. You lucky devils! (teehee)

I won't be getting one either, but it must be really nice to know you're going to get in at least one school!

Linkin, do you have some crazy hook?
I have slightly better stats do you do, 1530 SAT, 34 ACT, 7 SATII (740-800), and 17 APs.
You think I'll get one?

good lord, 17 APs?!?! You crazy.

To answer someone else's question, not all of the letters were sent out yet. I believe they are sent out in batches, and they could come as late as early March. I believe March 1 is the last postmark date since you need to RSVP for the "Up Close" weekend by about March 10.

I got one today

SAT 2350
SATII 800, 800, 730
ACT 35
GPA 4.48
RANK 1/251

My midyear report hasn't been submitted yet, either.

Eh, I wouldn't read much into it. I'm sure there are more than 350 applicants who have great stats. The more subjective parts of the app could be a major factor in who gets these.

Assuming your GPA is good and you did well on the APs, I'd say you have a very good shot of getting in, whether or not you get a likely letter.

i don't know if i have a hook. i just had a pretty honest personal statement about my struggles with religion and baptism. i have some clubs and am officer of my national honor society. i did a lot of volunteer work at the cleveland clinic foundation all summer last year. i've volunteered in some other labs.

congrats to all who've gotten the likely letter; you deserve it...do they go through all the applications in roughly the order they were received? since linkin06 sent his app in early december, they might not have read the apps that came in closer to the deadline...
so, has anyone gotten this letter AND sent their application in late december/early january?

sigh.
so i guess if you don't get a likely letter, then your chances of a scholarship are practically zilch, right?
sigh again.
i love duke. if only it would love me back.

What I figured was that likely letters might be sent out based more on stats, as they haven't had all that time to read the essays yet. I thought they might just take some of the people with the most amazing stats. But, that's just a guess. Correct me if I'm wrong.

At least one person (usually your regional director) definitely reads the essays before you get a likely letter. If that person is very impressed with the entire application, he/she may consider you for a likely letter. The director of admissions, or maybe an associate director, probably reviews the application again before a likely letter is sent out.

They certainly wouldn't send one based on stats alone, as a likely letter is practically an acceptance.

here's to hoping that's true. :/

I submitted my Duke supplement on December 1st (so that I would get an interview), but I did not submit the essay part (the Common App) until about December 27th or 28th.

So I am an example of someone that got a likely letter even though my app wasn't in until very near the deadline of the new year.

17 ap's would mean you're taking like all of them except for the languages. @_@
i'm sorry, but taking AP's for the sake of having AP's (especially ones like Art History) just seems like a waste of time.

heh one of my best friends has taken 16 ap's throughout high school, 6 of which are in her senior year. She's stressed out as **** even though it's 2nd semester. I couldn't imagine taking 17.

i don't think my stats are like genius level. i just worked hard and tried to make an honest and personal app.

dude, I got my letter and I haven't even had my interview yet....kind of strange, or does the interview not matter for adm. purposes?
