I don't know particularly about your involvements, but they were probably really great and showed you had a genuine interest in learning and being active, which is one thing uva really looks for. It's true that certain stats such as your SAT score are essentially average, but good, honest essays, heavy involvement, and a relatively tough courseload will put you over the top and into echols contention, since you've shown that you've gone beyond just being one of the many instate students in Virginia that score easy As in easy HS classes and all that.

Also, you're right in that Asians aren't underrepresented -- actually they're very overrepresented in relation to the national population. As a result, it's actually more difficult for us to get into uva and other schools than it is for any other ethnic group.

Wow!!!!!!! I got this letter yesterday, too. I mean, it's pretty obvious it's a likely letter since they ask you to seriously consider their school after applications are submitted. I didn't apply for the Jefferson Scholarship because I missed the deadline. :-( So...what are the Rodman and Echol's scholarships? I am in-state; would that qualify me for them? Also, my stats are on other threads if you are interested.

If you didn't recieve this letter, are they still giving your application consideration? I'm sure this is a stupid question, but it is still possible to get in if you didn't get the letter, si?

The vast majority of accepted people do not get this letter.

Echols and Rodman aren't scholarships, but entitle special priveleges such as priority registration in the College of Arts and Sciences and Engineering School respectively.

Of course they are giving your application consideration. Like sv3a said, most people who are accepted to UVA do not receive this letter. I go to school in-state (northern VA) and a lot of my classmates have not gotten this letter. I think they are trying to give early indication of one's chances in order to recruit good students before the official notification date of April 1.

Well, if you applied ED (in case any of you did and are reading this thread) then you will not receive this letter no matter what, because UVA already knows you're coming here. Still, that doesn't mean you won't get Echols/Rodman if you are as qualified as the other recepients, but keep in mind that Uva does have a less incentive to give it to ED'ers since they usually reserve this for RD students who will also be accepted into other top universities.

4.0 UW, about 4.6 W. 2380; 800, 770, 650 SAT IIs, 5s all AP exams. I tried on the essays but I had to get the app in so early (Dec. 1 for Jeff. Scholarship) that I ended up not liking them much.

If I went to UVA...I would really, REALLY want that Echols (I'm in-state, BTW).

So I suppose we've come to the consensus that if you get a likely letter--from anywhere--you're in to that school. Wow! That's so amazing...I have issue with UVA, though. Like I said, I really want to be an Echols scholar (when do they tell you? April? Or do you have to say, "Yes, I'm coming?), but the wording of their letter was far less solid (on the other hand, they give a number to call and say they can arrange for you to stay! Wow!) than the wording in Dartmouth's likely letter...which I got yesterday. Dartmouth's says there's "no question" that you'll get in. You can see why I like it better...this one ends on a rather anticlimactic tone ("We'll make our final decisions by the end of March...") That, combined with not advancing from local rounds as a Jefferson Scholar, has kind of soured the mood about UVA a little...I might have been more excited if their letter had come before Dartmouth's. When I got Dartmouth's I was jumping up and down.

I got a letter too.. they must send out several of them! I probably won't qualify for it, but do they ask you to apply to Rodmans after you're accepted or before? I applied to engineering....I hope this truly is a likely letter and that I got in!

I'd say there's a 99% chance you'll get echols with those stats combined with getting the likely letter. Remember, Uva doesn't want you to go to Darthmouth/wherever else which is why they'll give you Echols =)

You'll get a preliminary email about mid-late March telling you you've been offered to become an Echols Scholar, and some details about an Echols-only day on the lawn that occurred I think on April 1st last year, the day after spring break for us. The official letter will come about a week after the email.

Ravenna, it looks like you'll have an excellent shot at being named an echols scholar. Last year, I was notified by email on march 15, as were the other echols scholars. Here's the link:

It looks like you'll have some good options. If you're not in a position to get good financial aid from Dartmouth (and any other schools you get into), then UVA is probably your best choice. If not, then you'll have to do some serious soul-searching this april :) .

So...waiting 1 month now! (E-mail is an official acceptance, then? Is there a letter to accompany it?--My school counselor takes them and copies them and then she puts your name on a big map of the US w/the school you have gotten into. Now I don't know when would be an appropriate time for her to do so! Now? March? April?)

Plus we get a candy bar whenever we get in somewhere ^^ I was considering applying to ODU and CNU to get another candy bar, but it would've been too expensive ^^ just kidding...
