Likely Letter

UVA is known for it's preppiness

I got my likely letter from UVa yesterday: 1510/2260, 96.5 gpa, SAT II's 720,770, 780.

Does this mean I'll probably get into Echols?

SAT IIs barely matter at all. Assuming that your gpa has given you a high class rank, you've taken a challenging course load, and you wrote good essays than that would be indicative of you getting Echols.

To answer the premed questions, the first basic, premed chemistry (Chem 141) course is a piece of junk because it's essentially a premed weeder. The material looks pretty basic, but apparently it's fairly competitive. A good score on AP or IB Chem will get you out of that. However, I would suggest taking the more serious first-year chemistry with a smaller class of about 100 people (Chem 181). Premeds also take it, but many/most are people interested in being Chemistry majors, Biology majors, Biochem, etc. Plus it gets you to orgo a lot faster (second and third semesters are organic, while for the 40s series orgo isn't until you're third and fourth semesters). You don't actually need to test out of 141/142 to take 181/182. If you had a good test score you could technically go straight to 241/242 organic chem your first semester at uva, but I wouldn't recommend it.

thanks for that information. I don't want a piece of junk chem class. i'm in ap chem right now and took ap bio last year. ap chem is pretty tough, but the problem is that our teacher has been stopping to teach us and just letting us use a textbook for the most part... which is stupid. so that makes it pretty tough.

That's how schools generally works. The AP exam for chemistry is fairly easy though, as long as you read the material.

Does anyone/has anyone gotten it from ED? (like if they were deferred)

sorry if i wasn't clear btw..i meant by 'it' in that last post..the 'likely' letter that everyone is talkin about

No, no one deferred early decision will get a likely letter (or echols/rodman scholar status)

Yeah, likely letters go to clear admits. If you were a clear admit, you would've gotten in ED.

niceee so if you get a likely letter your DEFINITELY in?

That is the general consensus. (Just don't (a) fail your classes in the last semester/midyear or (b) get convicted of a crime, suspended, expelled, etc....) I assume this is why UVA puts that last little notice in? So that a person can't take them to task--or court--for saying that they were guaranteed admission in a "likely" letter. (Dartmouth DOES guarantee admission, and apparently has only turned down 2 in more than 10 years after instating this "likely letter" policy.) ^_^

BTW, another guy in my class got one too! He doesn't use this site, so he didn't know it was a ticket of admission! When I told him he was so happy...^_^ Fun times.

did anyone not get this letter?

haha, the vast majority of people who aren't on CC don't get the letter, amnesia.

yeah, like me.

Well, I didnt get the letter

That comment is a bit harsh dont you think. I admit, I am not half as stellar as most of those here, so I am waiting patiently till April.

Which comment is a bit harsh?

i guess the CC curve definitely is high. it seemed everyone got one. im gonna ask this kid in my class if he got a letter.

CC attracts top students. A lot of people did not get them. If most people who were going to get in got them, the notifaction date would be February whatever...not April 1. I'm sure they haven't even looked at a lot of the applications yet. Don't worry about it. Just wait until April 1 and see what happens.

It's not really that big of a deal. Even if you didn't get the letter and have a good GPA/test scores/ECs, you still have an excellent chance at UVA.

sorry but what is CC? I am new here
