likely letter?

a fd of mine's been receiving stuff from colgate and recently shes got this letter telling her the colgate admission office enjoys reading her app form blablabla, does that mean she's in or does everyone get that?

Hmm I got something like that a few weeks ago...I don't think it's a likely tho

hmm, didn't get one of those.. so maybe it is a likely.

D got one of those about 4 weeks ago. I don't think it is a likely letter.

I don't know if those are likely letters or not, but I sure wish my D had gotten one! Why would they go to the trouble of writing a letter saying how much they've enjoyed reading your application if they weren't planning on accepting you?

What exactly does the letter say?
I don't think I got one...

Hmm, I think I threw it away...I am like 90% sure it wasn't a likely though, because I def would have picked up on the not-so ambiguous wording of "you're accepted"!! Plus, I'm definitely not expecting to get in so I don't think I would have gotten one if it were a likely...anyway, it said something like "the class of 2009 is the brightest in our school's history, blah blah blah, we have thoroughly enjoyed reading stories of tragedy, triumph, and comedy, blah blah blah" then it went on to say something along the lines of "we have enjoyed reading about your accomplishments, and you should be proud of all you've done..." which is sort of likely-ish but I think it was just a general statement. Don't stress about it :-)

It does sound a little general...but how come i didn't get one? :(

everyone got one...it was a generic letter

maybe my sister threw it away...

I didn't get one either....and no one in my family would have thrown away anything of this sort...

Colgate does not send "likely letters"

Are you for sure otis? Not even wink letters?

I don't think Colgate sends likely letters - they have sent early write type letters (early acceptance letters).

Colgate, like the majority of well known liberal arts colleges and universities today, does send likely letters.

Still think Colgate sends early acceptance letters. The Ivies send "likely letters" because of league restrictions on sending actual acceptances before April 1. Colgate isn't subject to any such restriction - they don't have to beat around the bush, they can come right out and say "you're accepted". Williams and several other selective LAC's also send early acceptance (not likely) letters.

This year friends of mien received likely letters from colgate, bucknell, wake forest, georgetown, uva, and duke. It is a method of courting students who they really want to go to their schools.

I don't think that you understood his post. Why would they suggest that they would get in if they can come right out can say it? It makes no sense to send likely letters when you can send early acceptance letters.

Did you see your friends' letters? Are sure that your friends are not just calling them likely letters when they are really early acceptance letters?

The letters were essentially the same as ivy likely letters, except they were more personal. They would tlak about what a great application they had and what a great fit they woudl be at their school and how, as their admission was likely, they should visit again.

Colgate sent a letter to all applicants in late February or so (see above in this thread) saying they were enjoying reading the applications, etc.

For the top applicants that Colgate really wants, Colgate gives the Alumni Memorial Scholar award (top 200 applicants). See other posts on this board - this was given to some of the "early" accepts - starting in early February there are posts about this on this board, but AMS awards also went out to those getting acceptance letters in late March.
