Likely letter

DeanJ: As a parent, I just want to commend you for being so helpful, patient and timely with your posts. I can only imagine how tight your time is right now. And this comes from a W&M alum!

I didn't get a likely letter until the first week of march, and my credentials were as strong as those that anyone else has posted so far. I got pretty anxious about it, but eventually the letter came, followed soon after by an actual offer of admission (which was expected anyway).

sorry if this sound dumb, but what is TOEFL?

its a test used for international applicants to asses their english

I don't think that's very nice - not all the English are asses :-)

got one today..

here are some stats
rank: 3/477
sat: 2310

id like to go to uva, but money is a factor - no jefferson scholars :/

We don't mean to Dean J, but we can't help it. After years of working our brains out we stress over everything real and imagined. Right now, lack of a likely letter is another reason to agonize.

We are in High School, worrying is what we do....

Well here's the way I see it: Any student whose caliber warrants anticipation of a likely letter is all but guaranteed admission. In other words, if you think there's a shot you rank among the top 5% of accepted applicants, then how could you be worried about being denied admission?

I got the letter! Being OOS, I'm very excited. Virginia is one of my top schools.

Proof that miracles do, in fact, happen:

31 ACT
3.93 uw GPA, 4.23 W
4/343 (school is pretty mediocre)
great ECs, I wrote a big hit-or-miss essay. Guess it was a hit!

Funny thing though: my high school wasn't even listed in UVA's database, which is supposed to have just about every hs in the country in it. When I called the admissions office to have them input it, the lady was like "I've been working here 10 years, and I've never had this happen!"

Quick question, Dean J: are these LLs sent after review of mid-yr grades? My grades were fine and stuff, just curious.

Also, you said, "It's just a letter, not an offer of admission." Why would they reject you after sending you the letter, asking you to visit, etc. Again, I realize only a minute % do NOT get in after receiving a LL, but what is the reason behind that?

DS was thrilled to get a likely letter today. We are so delighted for him! He's worked very hard to earn himself the nice choices that seem to be shaping up.

His basic stats:

OOS
Legacy (mom - UVA Law School)
SAT 2340/1540
4.02 GPA
6 AP's
Ed-in-Chief of school newspaper for 2 years, varsity tennis, several other activities in school & community

Congratulations to all of you who got your own likely letter, and for y'all who are still waiting, listen to Dean J!!!! :-)

Congratulations to all who got a likely letter!! How exciting! You are in!

We aren't done with the process. It's rare, but things can change in the second round of review.

ohh, gotcha. Well I'm perfectly fine with just one review, to ya know, save you the time....

;)

Lol, yea, you're gonna change your mind on a valedictorian with a 1500 SAT and great essays/recs/ECs...right...

Haha, I wish I had those stats....I'm guessing they only revoke them if mid-year grades reveal a D/F, or the student has disciplinary problems or something.

I think that revocation of acceptance is a pretty rotten thing for the Office of Admissions to do, especially for something relatively minor like getting a few bad grades or an alcohol/marijuana possession charge. But I imagine there aren't that many people who lose their acceptance each year...

Someone earlier said like in the single-digits %-wise lose their acceptance. So basically as long as you don't screw up, you're fine.

Congrats to all who got one, everyone else, hang in there, and good luck!

yay I got one! =)

Oh! So Happy!! Congratulations! I've gotten to know so many of you folks over this past year, so it's cool to see nice reports of success! I hope to see you all here on Mr. Jefferson's Grounds next year. Please contact me, as a student, if I can answer any questions.
