Looks like 800 scores on the SAT II Math IIC are the deciding factor... no really, look at all the 800s...
thats ridiculous! The email had my name and application ID number and everything! They couldn't have mistaken !!! I HAVE TO EMAIL THEM ABOUT THIS!!!
maybe you have a sadistic mailman, if you know what i mean :D

flopsy, with so many 760+/800 on mathiic i bet it starts to look old after awhile...maybe they've started looking at other things, like how sexy the applicant's name is :D

I got the email but I haven't had the physical letter yet probably because I'm an international. lol what if I won't get the actual thing o_O

Applied to chemical engineering
stats:
SAT: 2100 (800 Math, 610 verbal, 690 writing)
SAT IIs: 800 in both Math II and Chemistry
UW GPA: 3.97
No APs offered in my school
ECs - mainly on music, some on math and science

I'll keep my fingers crossed...

lol why not just wait for decision to come out instead of bugging the heck out of undergraduate admission about this email that explicitly told you its not an acceptance letter...

exactly

.

Man, I didn't get it...
Major: Computer Science and Engineering
UC GPA: 4.0 (W)
AP Scores: 5 APWH, 4 AP Language, 4 AP CompSci A
ACT: 33 Composite, 33 E/35 M/33 R/30 S
SAT IIs: Chinese 800, Math II 780, Chemistry 740
Taking AP Calc AB, AP Physics B, Calculus 2 (at CC), and AP Gov this year
ECs: Generic, not so good, however I think I have some special circumstances that are quite rare...

O_O, heck, I even got Regents at Irvine... I think it's my second essay, which instead of writing about "Engineering", I wrote about piano... lol

did you have to write about engineering in your personal statements? i didn't....ughhh

^No you didn't. I think ray's situation is pretty odd, especially with the Irvine Regents too. Then again, LA always does reject some qualified applicants for odd reasons. Either that, or it alludes to maybe a second batch this year (although I wouldn't count on it still)

i wrote my personal statement about engineering...must've been a strong factor for me

btw i got the physical letter

@Ray: I think you didn't get Regent's because you don't have a lot of math-oriented AP claases.

This is why you didn't get the likely letter.

yeah i just got the physical letter in the mail :-)

^^^ I got the letter with a 3.96W; must be the Math2C -.-' 800 here too >_>

I think UCLA just hates me...

goes to emo corner and cuts wrists and cries

Must... play...Brawl...to...get...rid...of...emoness... :P

@Castel: I explained the lack of my math and science AP classes due to the fact that I was placed in Algebra 1 freshman year, therefore, I couldn't advance to take the AP math and sciences etc...

=/ i don't really know how ucla is doing their admission stuff, but ill just hope that not everyone who didn't get the letter is rejected.

maybe it was my world essay. i feel like it didn't really answer the prompt -_________________________________________________-

got the letter w/ 800Miic&Chinese 770Chem 740Physics
SAT ONLY 2000 ! GPA only 4.13 ! so i think subject tests are the key
started off freshmen yr. in algebra1, too...(and CP sciences) but worked my way up to AP and honors through takin math courses over summer and gettin A/A+s in science/math classes...guess thatz wut theyre lookin for?

Flopsy:

I didn't get 800 on math2... 720 to be exact and 760 on Spanish...

I still think GPA and essays make the most impact (because my SAT1 is horrible). I wrote about computers and my extensive work/volunteer experience in the field that I want to major in...

mb27052863:
Your SAT2s are great. Again, I don't think they weight so heavily now on SAT1 (as long as it's somewhat within their range). Getting from normal math to APs and sciences shows a lot more dedication than getting 2400.

Here is my take on this letter.

All other UCLA colleges admit their freshmen through the generic Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools (UARS).

However, it's not so with Engineering (HSSEAS). UARS has to send your files to HSSEAS for consideration, and the decisions will be made by HSSEAS, not by UARS. HSSEAS will go through your application and recommend you for admissions/denials to UARS, which will then send out the official admission letters near the end of March.

So, that letter most likely means you have been recommended for admission by HSSEAS, and barring any catastrophy (some C and maybe an F in 12th grade) you should be packing your bags for the dorm.

The reason HSSEAS sends out that letter early is easy to understand. They have to compete for qualified students against other universities which are equally attractive to potential students. That's why they are having that open house early to try convincing you kids to pick UCLA as your first choice. Remember, it's a two-way street! You want them, but they also want the brightest group and you guys are their first choice, right?

Good luck to all of you, and I hope you all decided to join UCLA. I did my undergraduate work elsewhere, but all my graduate degrees are from UCLA HSSEAS and I got one heck of a good education there.

By the way, my son just got the letter last Monday too :-)

Feels good to finally get in somewhere
