Today I got a likely letter from Chicago.
Does anyone know how many of these they send out, or if they did it last year?
I was very surprised, and I bet many of you will be getting one soon too. (:

What does it say? Can you share the contents without divulging your identity? Thanks!

Really? I think this is unprecedented! Must be Nondorf. Congrats! You must be a crazy strong applicant.

I had heard that Chicago didn’t send out likely letters ever. Must be a new policy this year.

WhollyGlib: Mine was pretty generic, not too personal. The standard message that the acceptance is conditional on continued positive performance, a little information on why Chicago is a great school (as if I didn’t already know…) and information about Admitted Student days and on visiting Chicago. Nothing else in the envelope but the letter. I must admit it was a very nice surprise.

verdicity, thanks and congratulations!

If you have received a likely letter: I am wondering what your U of Chicago account says when you log in. Is the letter posted as a decision letter? What does your status say?

stressdmom: My U of C account doesn’t tell me anything new. This letter, while it is a guarantee of acceptance (barring some sort of precipitous decline on my part), is technically unofficial.

To those who received a likely: Are you an athlete?

Ditto on the no status change. My Chicago page only says “application complete.”
I’m not an athlete, nor am I a particularly strong applicant - at least objectively. I was deferred EA from MIT, for whatever that’s worth.
I’m 999% sure my essay got me the likely. (: There’s little else that’s outstanding in my app.
Anyway, thanks for the answers!

verdricity and elanorci: thanks for sharing yr achievment abt the likely letters. You must be exceptionally attractive as UofC applicants. For those of us who r still waiting for some sort of admissions signs, would u post the letter, without yr real identities of course?

This’s something new for UofC so many of us are anxious to know how the letter says. Congrats again!

wow that’s awesome! you guys are so lucky (and dserved it too!) Did you get an email as well, or was it just an envelope?

Hi, sorry to be a noob, but I’m curious. What is a likely letter?

A likely letter indicates that you will be admitted to the college when they send out formal decisions. It lets them show interest in you and you might give them a stronger look because of that. It usually is super rare (except for athletes), but some schools (Dartmouth for example) have sent quite a few in the past.

Oh okay, thank you!

Only 2 people say they’ve gotten one? Figured CC would have at least a few more if UChicago is really sending them out…

I got one as well. Also, the school has updated my application status on my Uchicago account so that when I log in, it says “Welcome Admitted Students!” and lets me view my decision letter and lets me look at housing information…

^Plot twist.

Indeed. I thought likely letters were somehow not allowed to explicitly offer admission?

Congrats mach!
