So dual-degrees don’t get LLs?

I got one to SEAS as I mentioned earlier. I’m pretty surprised - I thought I’d be much more of an on-the-fence applicant. Upper class income, 2290 SAT (690 CR), decent but not amazing ECs, 4.1 unweighted GPA on 4.3 scale, 16 years old (skipped 7th grade), and am originally from a small eastern European country but moved here with family when I was 2 years old. I was pretty proud of my essays, including my Why Penn essay, so those probably helped.

Major: CompSci. Another poster mentioned something about that possibly being a major that is in demand at Penn, so maybe that was a factor as well.

my stats are on other threads (namely the Columbia likely one, and UChicago EA one, I think), if you want to see them!

Do you guys think the people who received the likely letters had submitted their application a few weeks before the deadline or had had their interview a while before?

I submitted mine a few days before deadline and had my penn interview only a week ago

I got a likely email, but submitted mine just a few days before the deadline and had no interview.

i got one
checked my email an hour before my bday lol
i applied for nursing. turned it in a few hours before the deadline and no interview.
SATI: 2150: 660CR 800M 690W
SATII: 800M2 800Chem 790Bio-M
GPA: 3.86uw, 4.2w
I go to a very competitive high school so my gpa isn’t that high and my SAT score isn’t that high either cuz reading and writing isn’t my thing. I feel I got in because I did a lot of extracurriculars: ceo of a non-profit organization, high school cheer 3 yrs (co-capt), competitive cheer 1 yr (won 1st at u.s. finals, a few national championships, etc.), 4 yrs of marching band, 4 yrs of concert band, ARC blood center volunteer, volunteered with an organization that pairs you up with special needs kids, kaiser externship, tutored 4 yrs, had a 20 hr/wk part time job, went to the naval academy summer seminar, clubs: medical explorers & american cancer society, ROP medical assisting course, summer UC berkeley course, and some other little things. I wrote about why I wanted to do nursing (cheer injury so i had an emergency awake surgery where my nurse was very helpful. the next yr i found i had minor heart problems so had to quit cheer, with the extra time from not doing cheer i volunteered more and took the leadership position in an organization to explore the nursing field etc.) having an amazing rec helped too

I got mine to SEAS! Unbelievably excited to go to Penn, it’s been my top choice for years.

SAT I: 780 CR, 740 Math, 720 Writing
SAT II: 780 Chem, 780 Math II
GPA: 3.9 uw, 4.5 w
I’m an underrepresented minority (even though I hate that term) going into bioengineering, so maybe my major is in demand? I also have lots of ecs, from marching band to being captain of debate team and doing drama club to quiz bowl captain. My essay was really good too, I think - wrote a lot about Philadelphia and Penn’s connection to the city. Hope to see everyone else at Penn in the fall! Go Quakers!

Same as PatrickM- I submitted just a couple days before the deadline and never got an interview!

thanks ![]()
yea my interview guy said the most interviews dont really matter too much anyways

oh well, no use worrying about it now

New article about this year’s likely letters just posted on “The Daily Pennsylvanian” website:

[The Daily Pennsylvanian :: Penn targets prospective students with likely letter campaign](Penn targets prospective students with likely letter campaign | The Daily Pennsylvanian)

Note these excerpts:

Interviews are not linked to the receipt of LLs. They move along on different paths. But seriously, I wish the Penn aspirants would stop lurking on this thread (all Likely Letter discussions quickly devolve into straw-grasp sessions) and on CC in general. If you’re a viable Penn applicant, then you’ve worked exceedingly hard for almost 4 years. Wean yourself from CC until you have kids of your own. What’s done is done. Stop adding to the stress by constantly checking and re-checking. You’ll be fine. Penn won’t make you.

Good luck and get out! LOL

Funny… Exact same message on Yale likely letters post.

I posted my stats previously in the thread.

I wasn’t offered and didn’t do an interview and I either submitted my application a few minutes before midnight the day it was due or a few minutes late. I didn’t really like my Penn essay, but I guess it was bolder than most. My other essays were pretty straightforward and that one might have seemed headstrong and ambitious by comparison. I think I chose not to write a brief optional essay. I applied to the College of Arts & Sciences.

Does anyone know roughly how many likely letters Penn will send this year? Someone indicated it was probably around 400 last year.

Do ED deferees get Likely Letters?

^
I doubt it. If an ED applicant didn’t stand out enough to be snagged in the early round then they’re probably not a strong enough applicant to warrant a likely letter.

@sammoc
According to the article in the DP that was linked above, they sent out about 230 nonathletic likely letters this year, especially focusing on outstanding applicants with interests in science, math, technology, engineering, and the arts.

So did any Wharton people get these?.. And how much tougher is it to get into Penn applying to Wharton over other programs?

is architecture considered in the arts or sciences… or is it a harder major to get into and therefore would not have any likely letters… I haven’t seen anyone at an ivy get a likely letter for architecture (please correct me if I’m wrong)?

Thanks ywna.

They are probably targeting demographics that commonly turn Penn down. Obviously, a lot of top applicants are going to be in that category, but Penn must not be as appealing to STEM applicants as it would like to be.

@wilmywood - Wharton’s overall acceptance rate is about 9%, compared with Penn’s overall acceptance rate of 12%.
