Likely Letters and Echols

Does anyone know the stats (sorry I keep using that word!) for out of state kids who are awarded Echols scholarships (or really, anything about what goes into receiving that award) if they've received "likely letters?"
Thanks!

OOS and instate Echols Scholars are completely on par with each other. As far as I know, the program has no non-merit-based preferences. Also, as far as I know, every person chosen by the Echols program receives a likely letter. I can't think of why they wouldn't.

consider those that receive likely letters as the "pool" of echols candidates. I believe that pool is created mainly using their stats but when they select echols scholars from that pool they are looking strictly at the essays.

thank you!

^^when are Echols scholars notified that they are being "nominated", so to speak. I received a LL, so does that mean I'm in the running for Echols? Can someone familiar with the process expand on it a little bit? thanks!!!! :)

learnmestuff, Echols scholars are never really notified about being nominated. The fairly worthless as far as most students are concerned. There are tons of reasons to come to UVA, but the Echols program isn't a strong one (unless you like to have your ego stroked).

hmm, ok. well if they were to win, when would they be notified? thanks! :D

My guess is that you'd find out by the end of this week or early next week. I received my Echols notification on march 15th a few years back.

okay, well I'd be shocked if I received it, just curiosity more than anything. Do they send you a letter, call, or what though?

and thanks again for answering my Qs, you've been awesome ;)

Dean J has said over and over again that not getting a likely letter doesn't mean you won't get Echols...so I don't know what to think. Her blog also said that we'll get emails if we get selected. My brother never got any kind of notification until the day before he got his acceptance letter. No likely letter or anything. He didn't even know what it was. And the Echols program is pretty awesome. If you get lucky enough to get it then it is definitely a reason to go to UVA, who wouldn't want the ability to study whatever you want with no requirements AND have priority class registration?!?! It is my absolute dream to get to be one of the chosen few. I actually drove by Maupin Hall today (where my brother lived as an Echols scholar) and I just pictured myself there under the weeping willow tree studying my third year class homework that I get to do in my first year, waving at all of the other kids who love to learn that I live with as they pass, living the dream. I know I am investing way too much into an incredibly unlikely event but just maybe....

Rencorps, think about it this way: if you didn't get a likely letter, dont get your hopes up. Just be surprised if you get one. Your chances of getting echols are very, very slim if you didn't get one, so dont worry about it at this point.

oh I know, I'm not going to get it. The only reason why I hope is I had a few things going for me, a brother who was in Echols, amazing recs (I know everyone's are but my counselor happens to know people high up in UVA well, so her opinion is well respected and she went on and on about how well I would do if chosen), I had a teacher rec from an Echols Scholar talking about how well suited I would be for the program, and I have a rec from a current professor at UVA. I mean I also have had impressive awards, top of the class, started charity projects blah de blah blah. But soooo many people are in the same boat I suppose. It is just crazy how wonderful applicants are these days. I'm not going to get Echols but I wish the absolute best to everyone who does. I just hope they all take full advantage of everything they are offered, live it up everyone! I just hope that my butt gets in to the school (I live in Charlottesville, btw so I see my dream school everyday practically, I'm not making special trips or anything). We always do go by the corner though on the way home from the grocery store instead of the fast way because we like to picture me there... Whatever this week brings I'm so happy for everyone who gets in and the lucky few who actually get Echols!

like im not trying to say that you definitely wont get it, but the mass majority of people that get selected got likely letters. Just be really happy is you get selected. And if you do well your first year you can always apply the second year, a lot of people get it that way.

Besides, UVa is a great school regardless.

I don't know of a single person in the Echols program who didn't receive a likely letter. I don't even know why someone accepted to the Echols program wouldn't receive one.

FWIW, you should be happy with just getting in. The Echols program is pretty worthless unless you like to have your ego stroked.

Cav has a good point. It seems really unlikely that an echols wouldn't get one, but then again, Melli said that happened to her. Anyways the benefits are mostly immaterial. The only major thing I see is not having to take area reqs, which is nice, but a lot of echols have lots of AP anyways. But if the area req thing is a big deal you can always try to apply second semester.

you have to have a really high gpa, but like half of the applicants get it! sounds good to me! just hope I get in really

Half the applicants get what? Only 5-8% of each incoming class are offered spots in the Echols Scholars program.

I got a likely letter, but haven't been notified of anything Echols-related (not that I was expecting anything anyway, I was really surprised to even get a LL). Just wondering though, have all Echols winners/nominees been notified at this point, or do they not find out until the admissions letter?

If I haven't gotten anything about it and don't see anything about it in the letter, should I assume it's not happening?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I've been "out of the loop" for a while.

thanks :)

about half of the kids who meet the requirement to apply for echols at the end of their first year at UVA get it.

Excuse me, I don't mean to sound ignorant or stupid, but what is an Echols scholar?
