Each year the College sends out three waves of letters to exceptional students who are "absolutely clear- cut" acceptances, according to Dean of Admissions Karl Furstenberg. These "likely letters" inform the students that they stand a good chance of being accepted when official letters are sent in April.

**The three mailings, which run from early February to early March, represent the ongoing process in McNutt Hall.

"We review applications totally at random," Furstenberg said. "So as candidates for likely letters emerge, we send them their letter. The three waves are not organized starting with the best."**

"Throughout the review process, when students emerge as outstanding, and we can be sure that they are a candidate who we would definitely accept, then there is no point keeping it a big secret," Furstenberg said.

Because the Ivy League is not allowed to mail decision letters until a mutual mailing date in early April, the likely letters provide the College with an opportunity to inform the top echelon of students that they are wanted at Dartmouth. However, Furstenberg pointed out that each year many remarkable applicants are not sent likely letters.

Dartmouth is not the only school issuing such premature letters. "Most of the other selective colleges send such letters in various forms and volumes," Furstenberg said..

"We review applications totally at random," Furstenberg said. "So as candidates for likely letters emerge, we send them their letter. The three waves are not organized starting with the best."

Furstenberg cautioned, however, that each year many exceptional students are not sent likely letters despite having extremely strong applications.**

Is there a consistent theme running here?

Relax...

handsonthedash,

I got yale ea and dartmouth likely.............but you'll have to find some other sucker to take that deal:cool:

Another question,

I remember KB54010 saying that he attending Destination Dartmouth over the summer. I know my daughter recieved an invitation to Destination Dartmouth, summer 2003 (and got a likely for class of 08).

Just wondering if there are any more students who attended Destination Dartmouth or Dartmouth Bound last summer?

I was invited but I could not attend because I was at Harvard Summer Program. I called them though about my situation about not being able to attend and the lady said it was fine.

Welllll.... :)

I got my likely letter today! I'm really, really happy right now, but it's been coming and going since I opened the letter. My long-long-time friend joined the navy today, and I've been upset, but the letter has helped a ton.

stanmaster, when did you attend SSP? which course did you take? and ur stats?

I attended SSP this past summer 2004. I took Biomedical Ethics and Precalculus and I recieved an A- in both of them.

Willy (when I saw your name, I took a deep breath and said to myself I hope he got a letter, but I was a little nervous because I felt the same way about Elizabeth during ED and then was extremely disappointed when she did not get in)

You have no idea how happy I am to hear this news about your letter. Your ears must have been burning because I was just talking about you and a few others to my daughter last night and I told her I really hope you get a letter (as I have been following you on this journey for so long).

I am sorry that you may miss dimensions because of Prom, but I also know that the the decision is going to be hard especially because there is another school that you are waiting to hear from.

Take a deep breath because a weight has been lifted from both of our shoulders. (I am soooo proud of you). Celebrate this moment, you've earned it :)

Take care, S

P.S. Yes, there are more of you that I am waiting to hear good news from

Congratulations, Bobby.

I'm so happy for you :).

yay willy! you deserve it.

Congrats WW, I hope I get to meet you on Move-In day!

Willywonka,

I always thought you'd be there us next September. I remember how worried you were that you had'nt applied ed. Doesn't seem to matter now!

Congratulations!

First, Congrats WW.
Hey do you guys know which weekend Dimensions is? Is it the same weekend as Bulldog Days Kalidescope?

Dimensions is the week before the last week of April, April 20 thru April 23.

This year wednesday thru saturday instead of Thursday thru sunday (i hope the change is not because of those 08's -just kidding) It I think it is being held before the school has midterms.

Sybbie (and everyone else who said really nice things to me), thank you so much, and not just for the kind words. You have no idea how much it all means to me, especially the help that the parents and students on CC have given me. I wouldn't have stood a chance without you guys.

Dimensions is Wednesday through Saturday? I could actually make it if I teleported back on Saturday morning (if it wasn't for Grand March). I guess it's just something I'll have to live with.

Ack, can't edit the previous post. While in the shower, I realized that I had been rude in my joyous haste and not replied to anyone but Sybbie. Thanks Rinka, FountainSiren and Handsonthedash.

Elizabeth, thank you, and please make sure to let us know where you land in April. I'm really pulling for you. I was really pulling for you last winter, too, but I don't know if I should say this. I don't want to stir up any still-sore feelings about the decision, but I was very upset when you were rejected. Dartmouth really missed an opportunity and it still confuses me and saddens me today.

Cangel, I have a strong feeling that we'll be meeting on move-in day, and I look forward to it! As you all may know, I only applied to six schools, with Dartmouth always in the first or tied-for-first or barely-second spot. I chose my list from long considerations about what I really want, and I'm ready to admit that I wouldn't be able to be comfortable at any school if I knew that I could have gone to Dartmouth. W&L is really, really close on my preference list, but I'm going to hold out through the GWH Scholarship Event to decide whether I think I'd fit in there nearly as well as I'd fit in at D.

My deepest, warmest thanks to everyone.

I definitely will let you know where I end up. Even if I'm no longer a prospective Dartmouth student, the people I've met on the Dartmouth board are still my favorite CCers. I truly appreciate all the support and kind words I've received from all of you.

You know, the Dartmouth crowd is also MY fave group of CCers...back in Nov/Dec., the ED Penn kids were my family. But, of course, decisions changed a lot of that. People who were deferred and rejected barely hang around anymore, and the kids that were accepted only pop in occasionally. But I like to think that the Dartmouth board kind of embodies what Dartmouth is actually like - always ready to help, to offer comfort, a positive environment filled with passion.
