Likely letters at Columbia

Does Columbia send likely letters to non-STEM, non-athlete applicants?

Thanks. I spoke to some current students at Columbia College and looked at some old threads on CC (yes, there are a couple EVERY year :p), so I’m not starting another one right now. If someone else does, I might join in. :)

Not for a while bud. Plus they only send them to a select few, top of their demographic, so not getting one doesn’t mean much

^ Yeah – anyone who isn’t a recruited athlete and is sitting around, pining for a Likely letter is pretty much wasting their time, emotion and energy. They go out to some ppl. So what? Maybe you? Great. Likely not. So what? Let this go…

From my experience receiving a likely letter (albeit as a STEM major) and talking with others on campus, it is uncommon but possible to receive them for other majors, as sometimes named scholars may get likely letters. Only the admissions office knows the details of selection, but I do know non-STEM major and non-athletes who got likely letters. However, they don’t afford you any sort of special status beyond the comfort of knowing you’re accepted earlier than ivy day, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

My non athlete, non STEM son got a likely last year. It arrived by email very early in his spring break–which wasn’t way before regular decisions came out. But it was a great stress reliever and he got to really relax and enjoy his spring break. The letter also offered him one of those named scholarships.

@intlprepmom Are these the scholarships you are referring to? (http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/scholars/named)

Yes, he is a Kluge Scholar.

Yes

So … anybody get one yet?

Lol I would like to know as well

well this kid on my stonybrook fb group spoke of getting into columbia yesterday, so i’m assuming he got a likely letter.

I’m not sure if I got one (didn’t say “Likely Letter” anywhere) but I got an email that said that my application had been evaluated and that, as long as my midyear report was good, I would “receive favorable word” in March.

Yeah, that’s a likely letter. I just got one via email today. So excited! Never expected this in a million years!

Has anyone received likely letters yet?

Did they send them all at once today or are they expected to be sent over the next few days?

My DS got a letter as well. we just couldn’t believe it! He’s half Hispanic, applied to Engineering with very good stats and a pretty unique essay (IMO). We’re so happy but have to see his fin aid before he get’s too excited.
Oops, just noticed that this thread is from last year. I guess I’m too excited for him!

@Friskysquirrel, Congrats! It sounds very promising. What is your intended major?

Also got one! I’m a CS student applying to the Fu

My DS got one today as well. He applied to Engineering. We’re all super happy but now have to wait for financial aid and see if it would be feasible >:D<
