Likely letters at Columbia

Do they send LLs to people who are not applying for engineering?

@intlprepmom, when was his spring break? Was it early or mid March?

Are they all emailed or are some sent by regular mail?

I got one today as well. When they say midyear review, do they mean grades from last semester?

congrats to those who got likelies? if you don’t mind me asking, what were your stats/ECs?

@adrianmcafee15‌ I believe it is either first semester or second trimester grades for the midyear.
Does anyone know what they would consider not maintaining your current level of academic progress? Would getting a couple of B’s do that if my transcript already had a couple of B’s on it?

@RunningForLife‌ I’m too lazy to post my full stats but the highlights are 4.95/5.00 GPA, 2370 SAT, 9 APs (including senior year). USACO gold, founded 2 tech start-ups which both had five-figures in revenue, a lot of work with the State board of education, and teaching CS to inner-city students.

I got a likely letter yesterday. It takes you to a Columbia admissions website only for likelys.

Stats: I can’t be specific because I would no longer be anonymous. But let’s just say I terms of academics and STEM extracurriculars I’m nationally ranked.

Good luck for other applicants. Not getting a likely letter doesn’t doom you. In fact you’re much more likely to be admitted without one. Also, it seems that Columbia, Yale (got a likely from them as well), and Stanford (friend I met at YES weekend got a likely letter) are all targeting strong STEM students.

I got a likely letter yesterday! Homeschooled student, very good stats and some unique extracurriculars. I’m totally surprised, though.

My son got his last year on March 5th. If I recall the postings from last year, STEM students seemed to have heard earlier (he is non-STEM). So March 5th is still a while away. Keep the faith all. And good luck.

Is anyone going to the Engineering Day at Columbia? I have Caltech prefrosh visit (which I already have a bought ticket for) and senior prom that weekend so I’m wondering if I could go another day and get the same/similar experience.

has anyone did an overnight visit to Columbia? I never got an interview. I wonder if it’s because I did an overnight visit and they think I don’t need one.

I’m a Math guy who applies to Columbia College, so am I considered a STEM student?
Also anyone applying to Columbia College receives a LL yet?

@superduper123 - my LL was for Columbia College. I applied for computer science, economics-mathematics, and east Asian studies.

According to the Dean, http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/what-are-likely-letters-like/, often colleges haven’t read all applications by the time they start mailing LLs. It’s so random and unpredictable that no one should stress out if they don’t get one. (But obviously that’s easier said than done. )

There’s no reason to stress about not getting one, but I’m not sure you can call it random. I’m pretty sure colleges look at applications in the order submitted (at least MIT and Harvard do, idk about Columbia but it makes sense), and I submitted mine on 1/1 right at the deadline. It’s more likely that they go through all the applications once and pick out the ones that stand out, and then the rest go to the committee for more thorough evaluation

You’re right - “random” was an exaggeration. Your assessment sounds likely!

I also submitted my app on 1/1.

Sooo jealous of y’all! I also submitted my app on Jan 1 so they probably haven’t even read it yet!

I differ from your opinions @Ostinato1689 I think that apps are assessed geographicaly. First the national apps then the international and the intl in zones and preference atleast that’s what I think.
