i know that likely letters aren't a secret and that they're announced as a common ivy admission procedure. but from what i know, likely letters were started to give top athletes a heads-up about acceptance so that they might look favorably upon that school. i also know that hyp in particular have minority recruitment programs, and that likely letters probably go to these people as well as intel finalists.
do you guys think that applicants that don't have a hook are not considered for likely letters by the ivies? (say we call a hook a high-achieving minority, intel finalist, member of alum lineage, big athlete, relative of dignitary/celebrity)

come on, this isnt that stupid of a question

I've seen a few posts about people who received likely lettes from Ivies and claim to be unhooked. I think everyone is technically "considered" for likely letters. But you have to be outstanding in some way in order to catch an adcom's attention well enough to receive one.

OH the pressure

shellzie, from what I have seen on here you seem to be right. However, I am somewhat puzzled as I thought they hadn't really looked through the applicant pool much yet. If you are right - and I think you are - they seem to have given everyone so far at least a preliminary glance, which isn't how I thought it worked.

They've seen all the applications by now. Now until we receive acceptance/rejection letters is when they "discuss" them.

hmm okay I wonder if they had already read my app when i sent in my supplement thingy at the end of Jan.

Oh..they already know...

they're just keeping us out in the cold 'till April.

I don't think they would process everyone's financial aid materials, only those of the acceptees, and that takes a while.
Gah,
beats me.

yeah i agree that letters are sent to only outstanding applicants, but let me rephrase my q:

duke and dartmouth, it seems, both have a set admissions procedure of mailing out letters to their top applicants. they have a set number of letters too, 350 for duke and 500 for dartmouth. is there a such practice that other ivies use, where they have a regular policy of sending these letters to a few hundred people?

Don't know about the procedure. But the only people I know of who have received likely letters from harvard, stanford, and duke, are the type you described: amazing, intel-winning students. Obviously, you don't need to win intel or westinghouse to get one, but that just gives you and idea of the type of applicants who do receive letters.

The others I've seen were just minorities.

I don't know if legacy people get likely letters just because they've had 5+ generations attend the school.

haha im not sure about that, i got a letter from duke and im not intel-winning. that's why i was wondering if other schools did a similar procedure

aoe2guy, congrats to you!

Wow, aoe2guy, you must have a pretty impressive resume!
