Likely Letters

Hey everyone!
I was reading a thread and saw that someone got a likely letter (Congrats btw haha). Just wondering if anyone else did as well and when. :)

That may have been me… Thanks! It came in the form of an invitation to apply for the coronat scholarship. I got it about two weeks ago. On another thread I posted what the letter said. Once I find it, I’ll post the link.

Here it is-

<a href=“Coronat Scholarship Invitation = Likely Letter? - Syracuse University - College Confidential Forums”>Coronat Scholarship Invitation = Likely Letter? - Syracuse University - College Confidential Forums;

Oh ok. So most of us wont find out until later? My stats werent good enough for that scholarship I think and I didn’t apply to College of Arts and Sciences. i"m at the point where I’m getting nervous haha. Can someone give me a quick chance?

1940 SAT
3.5 GPA UW 4.0 W
Top 12% (~515 students total)
10 AP Classes
Couple of Awards
Lots of ECs w/several leadership roles

And I hope you get it pfips123
Good luck to everyone!

Thanks! I’m sure you’ll get in. My stats were:
SAT:1960
ACT:31
GPA:3.9 UW
Rank: 32/517
fantastic extracurriculars with leadership roles.
some awards

I think they looked at the ACT more than the SAT for me because the ACT was substantially better.

Syracuse’s acceptance rate pretty fair- around 58-60 percent so you probably have a decent chance.

But what I see and what admissions thinks can be two different things. Demographics, essays, and recommendations play a role as well. Especially the latter two.

Good Luck! If I get this scholarship then maybe I’ll see you next year! :)

Thanks! Just seeing that makes me feel a little more calm haha. I think my recs were really good (one of them made me cry haha) and idk about my essays though, I wrote them last minute kinda. And yeah, hope to see you next year too!

My son has similiar stats as pfips123…but no coronat letter…plus he took the SUPA (Syracuse U bio course) in his HS junior year and got a 4.0 for both semesters, which netted him 8 credits.

ACT: 31 (got a 36 in math…fell down a bit on the english)
SAT II’s: Biology - 780, Math 1 - 760, Math 2 - 780
GPA: has a unweighted score of 98.7, weighted 104+
Taken a number of AP classes and in his senior year takes all college classes, running a 99 avg right now, unweighted in his senior year
He is ranked #2 in his class.
Great recommendations from school as well as work related
EC’s: mock trial, varsity tennis, scholstic bowl, math team, tutors students, lot of school involvement…his math team has been picked to go to sections
He was picked to be the only HS student to be allowed to volunteer at the Orange County, NY coroners office as a autopsy assistant. Does this on school holidays as well as in the summer…got a great recommendation from the Coroner.
Plus he works p/t in a regular job…so he is quite busy doing stuff.
He’s also been volunteering on the weekends at the local hospital in the ER dept for the past 2 + years and has put in hundreds of hours.
Very good essay

thought he would have had a great shot at a really good scholarship

Hmm what college did he apply to?

When should the first round of RD applicants expect to hear back?

According to posts from other threads it’ll be mid-march sometime before spring break.

Not sure…I know he said his intent is to be a bio major with a pre-med track. I find it kind of funny that on his Syracuse transcript (from taking the Syracuse “SUPA” program) he already has a 4.0 average from taking 2 courses but he has no likely letter or any other info from the school on wanting him to attend. That’s actually ok…he’s been accepted already into a number of other schools with good scholarships. He is waiting to hear back from a couple of Ivy’s…even though it may be a stretch. I do think Syracuse is a very good school but there are a lot of options out there.

Interesting. I know that the coronat scholarship is only given to those who applied to the college of arts and sciences. It just so happened that I decided to apply for dual-enrollment at both CAS and COE. I’m sorry your son did not receive a letter, he seems very qualified for the scholarship. I wonder what the mindset of admissions was toward that.

I’ve been accepted to- SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY at Buffalo, WPI, Drexel, and University of Vermont.

I was deferred by Dartmouth during early decision so I’m still waiting to hear back from them. Also waiting for Johns Hopkins and Boston University.

Good luck!

He was deferred on Brown and is awaiting to hear from Dartmouth, Cornell and UPenn. He also applied to Rochester, Boston U and Tufts. He’s been accepted to SUNY Bing, Suny Buffalo (Honors with tuition scholarship), Scranton (presidential scholarship w/honors), UVM (honors), Drexel (honors with scholarship). He is going to have lots of options.

It seems like a good amount of our colleges overlap. I got into the honors colleges at Drexel, SUNY Buffalo, and UVM as well.

Haha, Great minds think alike?

RichNY: In fact, your son will prob be offered the Founder’s Scholarship which I think is still $12,000/year merit renewable every year…highest merit scholarship at SU that is not Coronat

As a long time participant in all things SU, I am actually a little surprised that pfips was invited to compete for Coronat with a 31 ACT…in the past, yes, it is only arts and sci majors and the cutoffs have always been north of a 2200 SAT or a comparable 33 ACT…

There is also a Renee Crown Honors program which comes with your acceptance letter; that is for all schools (but usually much harder to get as a freshman Newhouse acceptee due to the higher stats required for admission altogether)…

You will all hear everything, along with scholarship very soon…probably Friday, March 11th @ 5:00 PM EST

wonder if SU has decided to include other things in the qualifications for Coronat this year??

Thanks Rodney, good info.
