Likely Letters

Because there are sure to be questions, let's go straight to the source. Dean J has posted the following on her blog:

The Likely Letter
We've had comments on the blog, emails, tweets, and calls about Likely Letters in the last few weeks. I thought this practice was going to go away, but I recently found out that the Dean is sending some out again this year.

Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: The Likely Letter

Please follow the link and read the entire blog where Dean J explains Likely Letters IN DETAIL. If you have questions for Dean J it's most effective to post them on her blog.

How can you tell if a letter you got is a likely letter? I got a letter from the school saying “The Committee on Admission has reviewed your application and found it impressive” but the rest of the letter talked about the Monroe Society. I’m kind of confused…

Is it from the Dean of Admission? Is the tone encouraging? That’s the letter. :)

I got that letter too! It talks about the Monroe Society at the bottom. hmmm

I was very happy to get the letter. I don’t find it inane to basically consider it an offer of admission.

It is definitely a likely letter. I got it too. Why would they send it randomly? Yay!

albby- they aren’t random. They know that top candidates have other great schools to choose from and they want to let you know that they like you. This also gives the applicant peace of mind, which hopefully further enhances the reputation of the school in the mind of the student.

TV4caster- yeah that’s my point. They aren’t random, and I am stressing the fact that they WONT send it out randomly. Clearly receiving this letter must mean we will get admitted; why else would they send it?

Basically, yes, you are admitted unless you do something stupid like get suspended for cheating, fail a couple of courses, etc.

I got one!!!

It’s funny because just today I was moaning to my friend in class about not getting into UVa (I made SO many mistakes on my application; leaving out my AP Human Geography score, sending my transcripts late and leaving out the grades from my college class. I also hated my essay, which somehow managed to sound snobby and sobby and the same time!).

So imagine my apprehension when I saw the letter lying on my table (small envelope: did I forget a supplement or something?). It honetsly didn’t occur to me that it was a likely!!! I actually skimmed the letter and told my dad that it was just about visiting campus.

And then I was like… “WAIT!!!”

But anyway, enough of my rambling! Congratulations to everyone who received a likely, and good luck to everyone else!! Now I just have to pursuade my parents to pay for it… (I live out of state :/)

Thank you so much, UVa!!!

thanks all for mentioning. my s has gotten the firm likelys from other schools (there is no doubt that you will be offered admission or you will be accepted we’re letting you know early). this seemed to say all but that – we hope you’ll seriously consider when we send the final decision. that’s exciting congrats to all

Remember only a small percentage of students get likely letters. If you don’t get one, don’t worry.

I just got my likely letter today too! Congrats to everyone else who got one!

I’ve been trying to explain the same thing to my daughter who is wondering why she hasn’t received one.
