do colleges keep track of the people they send likely letters to? if so, do they ever refer to this list when making decisions?

God, yes. The point of the "likely" letter is that you're going to be admitted, but they're not allowed to actually tell you that yet.

So, would that refer to those annoying colleges that keep e-mailing me with what feels like spam?

no, i mean if they sent you numerous letters by mail

which colleges send likely letters?

Plenty of colleges send likely letters, personal experience tells me Cornell and Dartmouth but there are so many.

Oh and here's a link that will help a little bit more, but it's not all of them

i'm talking specifically about Harvard.. they sent me like 2 letters about their school and my PSAT scores and how i should apply and then an invitation for an admissions info session thing.. does that mean anything? i realize it doesnt mean,"apply, we'll accept you!!" but does it help at all?

everyone who gets high psat's get those letters

it's more like "please apply so we can reject you and lower our admission rate!"

not to be harsh, but there's really no indication of your chances from those letters

what i thought was meant by "likely" letters is an actual letter after you've applies about your chances

do college even do that? tell you you might get accepted b4 april 1?

yes they do, that's what a likely letter is.

UNC-CH definitely sends them.

what about Emory? And if I don't get one before deadline, does that mean I will not get accepted?

No, they just send them to the "top" applicants in order to make them feel special I guess and give greater consideration to their school. The majority of those accepted don't get likely letters.

Check the Emory forum, people there probably know.

I think Wellesley sends one too

i got a UNC-CH likely letter and email

a line from the email: "As you continue to make plans for college, we hope that Carolina remains at the top of your list. You’re certainly at the top of our list, and we’ll be in touch soon."

a line from the letter: "While offers of admission will not be mailed until late January, we believe you are an outstanding candidate- the kind of student who will contribute to our community and make full and creative use of the opportunities we offer."

I got those too. =)
