likely letters?

I'm just curious whether or not Northwestern deals with those in the RD round. I think I read somewhere on the old board that some people in previous years got them, and I've seen this discussed in other forums. I'm just interested to know whether or not anyone that goes there and are regulars on this forum would know anything about this. If not, that's all right. I'm just wondering if I should know about a "heads up" situation. To tell you the truth, I'm not so sure if I'd like hearing about other people (or even myself) getting those if they do use them this year. I don't know. I just think it would probably be a very awkward situation (especially for the people that don't get them since I'm sure that they'd become a "featured discussion" in the Northwestern forum if they do come out with likely letters).

what is a likely letter

It's a letter that you get before you receive the actual admissions decision. It basically says how much they liked reading your application, etc. (from what I've heard since I've personally never had to deal with that as of yet), and through that letter, you can have a basic idea of what your decision will be.

I don't know. I still think the entire concept is kind of weird.

i didn't get that...i got a luggage tag and a letter from African American Student Affars though before my acceptance came

Luggage tags are cooler than letters anyways. Do you remember around what time you got that from NU?

I'm sorry. I'm just really starting to get paranoid due to the fact tbat decision time is rapidly approaching, and I haven't heard anything from NU since mid-December when they sent me this sort of book all about the School of Communication (the school to which I applied). The only thing that's worse than the waiting is the silence from the school during the waiting period.

Well dont expect them to be sending you stuff; you are obviously interested in the school if you applied so they don't need to be courting you with any literature. Just take it easy because there is really nothing you can do to speed up the review process. Read a book, go running, do SOMETHING when you start to think about it. But in the meantime enjoy high school and hope for the best! Good luck!

I heared you first rejection letters to put you off and then surprise the heck out of you later.

just kidding man as UC benz says chillout!!

i just got one in the mail today, so yes, northwestern does send them

wow, congrats!! :D

haha thanks dreamsicle

it pretty much tells you to "enjoy senior year, relax" etc

ethioman00
where do u live

northwestern sent me literature on some science programs.. but i dont know if it was "likely"

ethioman00 - That's really cool. At least you won't have to worry too much about getting nito Northwestern anymore. Prolly the closest thing I'm going to get to a likely letter was that "book" that I got from Northwestern in December (applied in October) on the School of Communication. I really don't think I'm smart enough to get an actual likely letter from them.

By the way, does anybody know the exact date that our decisions will be posted online? It'd be really nice to have an actual day (instead of just a time frame) to which we can all worry about and anticipate.

are NU decisions posted online? that would be really convenient.

Yes, they are posted online. I received my decision online (ED) several business days (plus a weekend) before getting it in the mail.

Congrats ethioman! Just curious: What are your stats? And how far from NU do you live???

Ethioman -

Hey, when did submit your application?
And what state do you live in?

Thanks

I'm from Southern California. Will that help with odds of a likely letter at all?

does anyone know if likely letters are only for weinberg arts and sciences or other schools as well (engineering)?

just wondering because duke apparently sends likely letters only for arts/sciences applicants

Guys - don't get worried if you don't get a "likely" letter. As far as I know, NU sends out VERY few, and they only send them to URMs, Athletes or people with unusual circumstances (aka a "hook"). Panther - hailing from Southern California probably won't help/change your chances of getting a likely letter. There are a lot of kids from LA (and surrounding areas) here, but I don't think geographics make a difference in who gets and who doesn't get likely letters.
