Are likely letters used for other purposes than athletics? When do these usually come? If they come around October, that means you have to have had your application in by then, right?

Thanks

D received likely letter last week for athletics. I have heard that they are issued for other talents as well...physics, music, etc. I am not sure if those letters are issued this early. The likely letter for athletes is given so that they will, essentially, commit to Princeton, instead of one of the other schools who are recruiting them. We will not talk to any other coaches now. Done deal!

congrats foto2gem for your D!!! :)

Ivy League "likely letters" come from the admissions office, so you have to have your app in to get one.

I read last year that Princeton will use the likely letter for top academic students this year, as well as for atheletes. Without ED, the likely letter is a way for them not to lose some of those top applicants to HYS. In the article it didn't say when those likely letter would be issued. But if their deadline is Jan 1, then most likely those letters would go out after Jan. Adcoms won't start reviewing applications untile everything is in. Dartmouth uses the likely letter most often and the first batch usually goes out in Feb.
