I got one of these bad boys too, and I'm very excited.

Knowing that you're good to go this early is an amazing feeling.

Knowing that you're good to go this early is an amazing feeling.

So it seems like these likely letters have been sent a bit earlier than usual. Could that mean admissions decisions might come out earlier? :)

gasp! egad!

how long did it take them to process your recs, etc. after you submitted them? i kinda got mine in late bc of the whole fire issues (which i've been cleared for), but i sent them a few weeks ago and they still don't show up as received. thanks, and happy turkey day!

I think they were sent out early for 2 reasons:
First, (like they did last year at Christmas), UNC sent these likely notices right before a holiday. So there's a positive psychological impact for the student. I know that last Christmas I felt all warm and fuzzy about UNC, and so did my whole family. It gives Chapel Hill an edge.
Secondly, I think this timing was strategy in that some people will be hearing from other schools who have early decisions/action/notifications. So, if the student has a likely from UNC-CH at Thanksgiving, and they get accepted somewhere else in early December, then UNC-CH maintains it's completitive edge with the students that they are trying to attract.
I think it was a smart move on the adcom's part to move up the timing of the likely letters.

well I think it also goes for early DECISION applicants as well. Say someone applies to a school Early Decision AND UNC EA. Then getting a likely letter from UNC can make the applicant reconsider about the ED school, and gives them the chance to withdraw their application BEFORE the binding agreement comes into play if the get accepted.

I got one today. Out of state-Georgia. Very excited!

Shannon, any interest in sharing stats as an OOS?

Sure--
4.29W GPA/32 ACT
8 AP's
School doesn't rank but probably in top 5 of a competitive private school.
I wasn't confident about UNC so getting the letter today was fun.

Son got his letter today. OOS Maryland

stats maximus?

Does anyone know of someone who received this letter in a previous year and didn't get in?

SATs: 1550/2200

1/550 public school gpa 4.0/4.56

7 APs one 4 the rest 5s (euro, ushist, chem, calc, stat, english lang, and psych)
Captain of four varsity running teams
tutor

I thought his essays were great but who knows. I'm sure his recs were wonderful. He's a laid back non competitive kid who's always laughing.

edit: Son was psyched!

My son got a Likely Letter today (out of state - Florida). These letters are not guarantees of admission, but are typically followed by formal offers of admission later. It's still important to maintain good grades senior year (Iheard one Ivy rejected 3 in 2006 who had received these letters). They clearly are a form of marketing to desirable candidates. They aren't used by all schools.

neuron: stats?

-800/800/760 writing (superscored)
-16 AP's
-NMS, NHS, Spanish NHS, Science NHS, Harvard Book award, multiple District/State music awards,
-2/479 class rank (public)
-SAT-II: math2(800), chem(780), math1(750), bio(700)
-Comp Sci research for six years on weekends/last summer for 7 wks at a large state school
-taking three college classes in math senior year (diff equ, discrete math, calc 3)
plays nine instruments, teaches, performs, composes

Unless you seriously screw up, Shannon, like completely dropping the ball on grades and start failing classes, or something along those lines, it is pretty much a guarantee.

neuron: Very impressive! Where else did he apply?

So I got a letter today... it's good to hear that what I thought was true (that it was a likely letter and that I'm all but actually accepted). I'm oos, by the way.

Congratulations all who received them. Johnson do you mind sharing your stats, location, etc. Also has anyone gotten a confirmation email or just through snail mail? TIA
