Every university is different, and likely letters can mean different things at different schools. This should be a three way conversation between you, your future coach and admissions at each school. If the coach does not offer you a likely letter, you may want to ask him/her if the admissions office ever issues them, and if so, whether you are a candidate, and what level of commitment (from them to you, and vice versa) such a letter might imply. Likely letters can mean as much as a "preadmission" to the university, and as little as, "if you apply we will very likely admit you, but no guarantees." It should be made very clear to you what a likely from each school might mean. Listen carefully, and if you're not sure about what you've heard, have your parents call, and/or talk with your high school or club coach about what is said. Don't assume, read between the lines, or stake your life on this process! PM me, if you have questions. I know a little bit, but not everything!

For Ivies there is a joint statement on Likely Letters relating to sports. You have to fish around for it. They can come in Oct. There is another thread on likely letters, but I can't remember where it is. Do a search. It mostly deal with letters telling folks they the school wants them and most did not sound like sports related or Ivies. The bottom line is that anything that does not come from admissions really is not a likely letter. It is a preadmission evaluation usually at the request of the coach. He she may be willing to use one of his her spots for you, which gives you an edge, but is not a guarantee. A letter from admission is more binding on the school and assuming you keep up your grades and do not do anything stupid (get arrested etc), you will get the official acceptance at the normal time.

Check the individual colleges forums on CC to see if/when likely letters were sent last year.
